What is 'dipstick scaling'?

Sorry if that sounds so vague, but what is this in terms of checking where an oil leak is coming from!

I would assume it's working out where on the dip stick a specific amount of oil should show.Ie, "this is where 1L shows, this is where 2L shows."

Or at a stretch it could be simply a fancy term for reading the dipstick.

Never heard of it. Perhaps different marks for HOT or COLD measurements for fluids with high thermal expansion rates, like ATF.

Or maybe it could be the scale used to show the oil level difference between full/low when building/modifying a sump! Basically as #2 post.
Something the original (Landcrab) Austin 1800 suffered from when first introduced. The level was set too high causing all sorts of engine problems in what was a well proven engine in north/south form.
