From experience avoid suzuki, they are a mission to get parts for. Where as my older 2 stroke Johnson still has parts available

Yamaha is the best 2 smoker outboard you'll get. But then.I've never had anything else.

You can still get very old Johnson's But not A Yamaha or Suzuki as they don't make the aluminum like the US does .I still go hard out on my 1975 Johnson 70hp .My friends 1995 Yamaha is now completely shot from corrosion. Mine got no corrosion. The Japanese are probably more reliable short term

Ps Johnson and Evinrude are the same.Mariner is the same as Yamaha

The yank motors are best for partsplenty of trhemwidly available& reasonable priceno matter the age .Stay away from suzukiknown forwater jacket/exaustmanifoldcorrosion & if more than 15 years oldits obsolete & no parts .available. Been theretried that .

we used to run Yamaha 25's on the back of surf IRB's, while maintained, they were absolutely hammered, drowned rolled bowled and a-holed.I was always amazed at how they just kept coming back for more. I even bought one off a club for myself and is lasted years until I sold the boat. I recall that some clubs tried the Suzuki 30's at the time, didnt last long.Having said that, I see they now use Mercury's as well (which are not actually a merc, just labelled). Ive had one bad expereince with a merc 80, so put me off. But know others who have had great runs. At the end of the day, buying second hand may not come down to the make of the engine, but the maintence its had and the life its led.

We had a 15HP Mariner on our little race boat. That thing could run at full throttle for hours on end with no issues. and that thing was thrashed.
In saying that, we had no issued with Tohatsu either(it was brilliant, it went through hell).

Yamahais the best, any outboard will corrode the secert is to maintain them properly and wash them out after each use

Makes no difference to some Yamaha's how well you flush them. Oddly though it dosn't seem to affect every one.
We had a brand new one in the family (older model) that was absolutely babied beyond belief. Always flushed out thoroughly, top off and wiped down with CRC after every use, pulled over every week without fail while in storage etc.
The leg completely corroded though with about 25 hours on the motor. It did go exceptionally well though as does my fishing buddes new one. His was showing some corrosion around the thermostat etc when I serviced it at 12 months. Not bad as yet though, and again always properly looked after.
They don't call them disprins for nothing.

i thought mariner was mercury!

Mariner Mercury Yamaha are the same motor with different band names .I think outboards should have a aluminum grade number on them.As you can get alloy that will not corrode in sea water ! Thats why I like Johnson the US navy seals use. But stillneed to pull apart to clean now and then .Flushing dose not do a complete job .the salt still sticks like weetabix on a plate you can't flush that off !

Yamaha. ThE boat shed at Orams in Westhaven looks like a Yama advert. Theres thousands of Yamis.

I saw that last month nearly every outboard is a Yamaha

Having the main Ovlov Yammy dealership and service/rigging workshop there helps.

charles.j,what sort of boat did you race! mine is a little Tennesee hull 3.150 mtrs long with a 82/83 25hp merc long shaft on the back, lacks the power needed to win races but great fun.About 20/30yrs ago there was heaps of these little clubmans throughout the countries clubs then they all but vanished, this last race season they seem to be coming back as strong as ever.would be good to get in touch with those that used to race them yrs ago, maybe find out where any old boats are now,we have so many pple interested in buying them to race,i think our Manawatu club has more than any other club in the country.
