Help applying 2k clear

kinger3, Jun 30, 3:34pm
Juat spent the last 3 days prepping the bonnet, 2k primer, then base coat all went on fine. Im having trouble with the clear coat though. Seems to be "flaking" as I apply it, hard to explain but I end up with little white specks and after the flash time I can blow of what looks like dust but it's not. Any ideas!

Hard to imagine whats going here, I take it you have put the hardner and reducer in the clear! Are you applying it wet! What PSI your gun at. What brand of product you using.

Dirty gun for white flecks! Water in the air line! Dust effect could be overspray settling on the surface after it's tacked off a bit.
You may have the pressure a little low too, it needs to be higher for the clear than the basecoat.
edit: too many variables .

UM, what are we looking at lol. Looks like a biscut.

shit, first time ever doing this, didnt realise you were supposed to put reducer in it. thats why I had a shitload left over. damn it

Most clears can be applied with out it and you use very little anyway. Me thinks your not using enough pressure especially if you have reduced it.

What brands you using!

whats the ratio!

kinger3, Jun 30, 3:46pm
I thought I may have been using to much so turned it down, what should it be at!

gunhand, Jun 30, 3:47pm
Mostly 2:1 plus 10% reducer, sometimes 15%, depends how you like it but 10% is what I go for.

Are you sure it's 2k! Sounds like dulon cobwebbing to me.

gunhand, Jun 30, 3:48pm
Rings a bell here to, an old bell thank god.

gunhand, Jun 30, 3:49pm
I use 30psi at the gun regulator.

kinger3, Jun 30, 3:49pm
yup its dupont selectclear

gunhand, Jun 30, 3:50pm
And unhardend or reduced 2K clear may well do the same thing (cobwebbing) but if you got it on it wouldnt dry let alone flash off.

Havent used it sorry but instructions are/should be on the can.

PSI was the prob, upped it and bang good as gold

gunhand, Jun 30, 4:03pm
Cool, hope it goes well.

Yikes. Your pressure must have very very low for that to happen.

What sort of gun are you using!

Do you know your fluid nozzle size!. Because at a low pressure any thing from 1.2mm up should atomise 2k clear at low pressures. UNless the nozzle is at the other extreme. As in above 2.0mm

Solvent popping maybe, hard to tell in picture.
