I have just bought a 15ft vista craft with a 35hp merc on the back dont know the age or history but got it as a project. I managed to get the motor running on the weekend but my problem is that its not pumping water and for the life of me i cant find the taltale. Maybe they dont have one could that be right i always thought every outboard had to have a taltale to pump the water out.it is a 35twin has exhauast vents just under the cowling which was spitting a little bit of water out. thanks in advance for any help.

i had the same problem with an evinrude 9 hp that was given. it had been unused for ages, got it going and nil water @ tell tail, pulled apart the water pump and rubberimpeller was badly deformed, alright,buggered ! me thinks you have same problem.

What age! some mercs, not sure of age, dont have a telltale until thermostat opens, how long have you run it for!

Early outboards dont have a teltale as such. They exhaust/spray water from an exhaust port just below the head at the top of the leg. Yours sounds like an early model so just to be safe, if it hasnt been used for a while you should replace the water pump. Not a big or expensive job & it will help you get to know & understand your motor a bit better. Google your engine numbers & you will find heaps of useful info there.

Old blue band had tell tale jet on side of upper case.But as above replace thepump impeller anyway& doshaft / g box seal.
