i know nothing about cars, could someone please advise if Rovers are ok ! i have been offered one 4 $1800, seems nice and tidy but do they break down much or are parts expensive !

dunedin_moto, Jul 15, 9:38am
You need to be more specific about the year and model etc etc as you cant generalize a whole brand one way or the other.
All makes have their gems and lemons.

splinter67, Jul 15, 9:39am
No they are not reliable yes they cost heaps to fix
Freinds dont let freinds drive rovers

dunedin_moto, Jul 15, 9:44am
So, you are saying that ALL Rover vehicles are unreliable and ALL of their different models over many years fit into that category and ALL are expensive to fix! Excellent summation.

mlh19658, Jul 15, 9:44am
awful cars. Expensive to maintain,

pdc1, Jul 15, 9:51am
Yes very reliable for oil leaks

sandndude, Jul 15, 9:52am
Mars Rover.

pinktrout, Jul 15, 9:56am
its a rover420 gsi 1997 manual, would i be better buying a japanese car for the $1900 ! thanks for the feedback, most helpful

splinter67, Jul 15, 10:02am
Buy something Japanese you can get parts for a desent price and most garages can fix them
Get it checked out before you buy it

vtecintegra, Jul 15, 10:05am
Maybe, maybe not. There are thousands of different models after all, some good some terrible

skin1235, Jul 15, 10:18am
I've always found them very reliable

I've had the boat tied to the same one for nearly 20 yrs, it's given no trouble so far

skiff1, Jul 15, 10:20am
rover is a good name for a dog. The 4x4s have a neat trick where they roll over.

llortmt, Jul 15, 10:20am
If you buy the Japanese car with care yes

mrsdoobercoons, Jul 15, 10:25am
Well, they're basically Hondas, but built by Brits.Have a read of thishttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rover_400_/_45

My FIL had a Rover built Honda Legend for ages, a bit older but came out of the same collaboration.Awesome car for what he paid for it, but definitely built by Rover.Great drive, shit of a thing to work on but surprisingly reliable and left an oil slick at the end of the drive that my Landrover would have been proud off??

socram, Jul 15, 11:54am
I owned a 420Gsi for three years and had no trouble whatever with it, but then, I am very careful when I buy secondhand, that it has a good service history.Used mine for a fair bit of towing too. Just as a matter of interest, what colour!
They are now getting on a bit in years and as with any 12/13 year old car, check out spares availability.

curlcrown, Jul 15, 1:21pm
Some Rovers in the 1990s that had Honda running gear are actualy good cars. Other than that anything pre 1976 is likely to be more reliable than anything newer.

llortmt, Jul 15, 8:14pm
I don't need to read anything mate I actually post from experience, they're asking about a MANUAL that will have the crap Rover engine NOT a Honda.

hornnett, Jul 15, 8:19pm
Its called an anchor.

johnf_456, Jul 15, 8:23pm
Must have good rust protection for that salt water!

thejazzpianoma, Jul 15, 8:32pm
This is the key thing, service history, condition and your continued commitment to proper servicing is more important than a badge on the front. In the under 2K price range thinking outside the square can be an excellent way to get a newer more reliable car than you would otherwise.

IMO, possibly the Rover is not the best choice (although I like that its manual, and perhaps if it was super tidy and well maintained.) but keep posting your ideas as there are many "hidden gems" in that price range.

Fiat Bravo/Brava or Punto's can be good options in the price range (depending on the engine) and there are quite a few others too like the Volvo V40/S40 which can be good reliable, safe, cheap cars. Cast a wide net and do your research.

doctor_evil99, Jul 15, 10:45pm
Nope they are notoriously unreliable - I had a one before - almost new and been back for warranty fixed about 7 times in 14 months.

They are now owned by Chinese car manufacture and they called it "Lover"

lotus7s3, Jul 15, 11:25pm
the 420 has the rover T series engine with a Honda PG1 gearbox. All the parts are available. Main problem with the T-series is a oil leak near the distributor and a tendancy to blow head gaskets.Otherwise good cars. Most of the suspension is Honda Integra DC2

splinter67, Jul 16, 5:45am
If you know nothing about cars buy something Japanese you can take it to any garage and they will be able to fix it. Continental cars like rovers fiats volvos and the like need to go to specialist garages and parts are more expensive and if they are not in NZ you could be waiting for weeks for them to arrive

richardmayes, Jul 16, 8:10am
One of my uncles in Auckland had a Rover P6B 3500S for a long time in the 1970s and 80s with no major problems.

(Except that the glove box was not really big enough for all the petrol receipts and speeding tickets incurred!)

ebygum1, Jul 16, 8:17am
The last time I was in England I was told there are two things that can be seen with the naked eye from space. One is the Great Wall of China, the other is the paddocks full of unsold Rover cars.
