Any educated guesses what is wrong?

Hi there.I have a Peugeot 307 s/w.It has gobbled up brake fluid every couple of days the last week.Even my mechanic is at a loss so I'll take it into the Peugeot mechanic. There are no signs of oil leakage on the wheels, on the brake pedal, anywhere else.Any thoughts re possible diagnosis!I read on a forum about it maybe being a master cylinder but it said I'd see oil under the passenger mat and tehre is none.No super technical responses please lol; solo mum, non mechancially minded question.cheers

Check for leaks between master cylinder and booster.
Could be leaking back into the booster and getting burnt in the exhaust through being sucked into the inlet manifold, into the engine and out the exhaust.

SIMPLE diagnostic tool if you have a garage. Lay newspaper out on the ground and park on it overnight. (with a full master cylinder) move the car out in the AM and see if theirs a big ol oil stain somewhere.--at least youll know the general area of leakage if its leaking externally

Any competent mechanic should be able to sort that out.It must be a leak - there is simply no other way it can be gobbled up.If nothing can be seen then the only other real option is that the master cylinder is leaking into the booster. It's an easy fix as long as the parts are available.

There are NO leaks on my gge floor.I dont' know what a master cylinder and booster looks like sorry. I can tell you, as my mechanic noted, the car is NOT blowing any smoke. My mechanic is lovely but said tehre are no obvious signs and has deferred me to a specialist; ie peugoeot themselves.

Sounds like this master cylinder/booster business. Thanks guys; glad to hear not too expensive usually .I'll never go european again even tho I love the car; I find my mainstream mechanic has now twice put his hands up in the air, and that even silly little things are expensive due to how it is all laid out.

check the floor mat, got a wettish feel to it yet!

I had a car that sucked it into the brake servo via a bad seal.

morrisjvan, Jul 15, 3:54pm
your servo will be full of fluid !

skin1235, Jul 15, 4:00pm
it will not be 'burning oil', the fluid will only transfer to the manifold while you are pumping the brakes, as long as you don't use them the tailpipe will not be blowing clouds of white smoke

Have checked under floor mats on driver and passenger sides; nada.I must drive the car to work tomorrow and it will be fixed Tuesday so will check before I levae and watch the warning light to show.I have 2 bottles just in case. What I want to know is can I be doing any further damage by driving it tomorrow! If my 'servo' is full of fluid, whatever that is, is that really bad for the car!

If it has ABS it maybe leaking into the nitogen side of the accumulator.

skin1235, Jul 15, 4:11pm
you'll be fine, drive as per normal, and get it repaired tomorrow or at the soonest opportunity

madeley, Jul 15, 4:11pm
Ummmm okey dokey. lol.I have tits; think I'm gonna understand that lol.

madeley, Jul 15, 4:13pm
Thanks skin1235.I will.I'll drive it with as little use of brakes as possible tomorrow - 1hr away for work - watch the light and take spare brake fluid - and will book it in tomorrow for Tuesday. As long as it doesn't do any hidden damage by drivign it; that was my main concern. Thanks again.

every so often we come across a comeback that deserves to be mounted ( framed)

can i ask if it is a auto or manual! i know some manual cars use the brake fluid resevoir to supply the clutch master cylinder. it could be clutch master or slave cylinder. only if it is a manual though.
