Can I just add them in and get the lift I want or is there more to it!

just wanting a bit of clearance around guard for bigger tyres on farm vehicle. Do you think that would be a cheap option and easy enough to do myself! (no mechanic but not stupid)

you may lose some articulation if your shocks end up not far from full extension. Hell its a farm vehicle, give it a shot and if it works then great.
and please be careful with compressed springs when dismantling/assembling. Spring compressors are cheap!

What vehicle is it! What lift do you want and why do you want it!

Jimny flatdeck ute to fit bigger tractor grips on so probably about 50mm lift I think. I've seen the body lift kits on here but I think the coil spacers might be easier and cheaper.

If its a long term thing the. What about a spring lift kit with new shocks to suit! Can you body lift those! I thought they would be a monocoque design
