I mean really 34.5 million per km, is it possible to charge that much and keep a straight face.
About time they built it yes i think so but is there a better option!

$930M for 27Ks of road = $34.44M per Km Big project, could be finished by 2021.

What overseas country are we borrowing that $ from! Running a few more trains and making them cheaper would help.
friendly_prawn,

Expensive. Not that Im pretending to know anything about the cost of roading but that does seem like a hell of a lot of dosh. One cant help but wonder if some one isnt getting a back hander to grant the work to certain company ragardless of what it costs us. Sure as hell wouldnt be the first time thats happend in NZ.

You would hope if they are spending that much they wont be doing repairs 2 weeks (or less) later like they do on every other new bit of road in NZ. Maybe its an oveseas contractor who will do right first time.

In the USA they use concrete for there roads I am told. Because it never wears out. And I'm told in good old NZ we use tarseal because we cant afford concrete.
Anyone heard this before!
trogedon,
Jun 22, 5:03pm
I heard they use concrete in the US of A because it makes it easier for the Mafia to get rid of their dead enemies.
friendly_prawn,

yeah well theres that too.

There's still some old concrete roads in Christchurch. They havent changed in the 20 years ive been here so im not sure why they dint still use concrete

Concrete is bloody hard on tyres, forget about chip - its a rubber eater
I love how these $$$$$$ figures are bandied about these days, look at Chch - I would kill to see the actual invoicing from say a demolition or a rebuild of a commercial building All councils & gubbermints talk about is 6 figures and above, I work along side & repair some pretty big commercial outfits vehicles doing these jobs in shake city - they along with me want to see where the actual dollars go
Build that road up north - wonder if it will take as long as our 'southern motorway' - the poor pricks building it want it done yesterday, but NZTA & the council only like working hours - if it was an alignment in Manukau it would have been 24 hour shifts & finished in a few months, down here (we pay road users too remember) its about 24 months & day shifts 5 days a week. Ridiculous when 80% of the eastern side of this city has moved sou west, the roading structure here was never imagined when it was laid. Rant ends.

I bet the idiot National / Labour / Green mongrels resource concents have a lot to do with it.
I reckon MASSIVE MASSIVE MASSIVE amounts of the $$$ will have to be spent in landscaping the bloody road sides, that the motorway passes.

I was talking to a guy the other day who worked on the Northern gateway toll road. He said he was charging at a rediculously high per hour consultantcy rate. He said he told them what they needed to do. They called him back into numerousmeetings where he just sat there hour after hour doing nothing but shaking his head. One massive consultation bill later they finally agreed to his first recommendation. Thats probably were a huge portion of the money goes to. Too over expensive consultants.
Why do they need consultants! Isn't that what the people building the road are supposed to know what to do. ie: It's like me being a painter, getting another painter in to consult and adding that cost on to the job. If Im a painter shouldnt i know what the hell Im doing!

a lot of the cost is probably related to mitigating environmental impacts and satisfying resource management requirements,I promise to do it for half as much, if the council buggers off till its done!

Anyone who wants to get away from Wellington quickly can't be all bad - I don't mind paying a bit to help them do that.

LOL that coming from an Aucklander (yeh I just moved out of the shithole), you may as well be in new delhi or beijing. Whos got a time frame for resealing works!. The hundalees south of Kaikoura was about 2 weeks until it got reaseald around new years 2011/2012, Taupo bypass lasted about 12 months, Waikato express way north of huntly, Desert rd and Napier - Taupodoesn;t seem to be much better.
