have you turned your back on mopar hemis trader 84!

No sir I have not. Mine is just about together . my mate assembling it for me is just sorting out some of the detail with Cometic and ARP in terms of O ring compatibility and fastener lengths etc . I love all things hemi if they have 8 rods swinging from the crank. In an effort to pass the torch onto the next generation whilst meeting their needs (ie be of Rising Sun Motor Company origin) I have come to learn about these cool looking little motors. So we get them when we come across them if the price suits. They do not hold a feather on the 1UZ in terms of bang but look heaps better in a ratty looking import truck that has been dropped on steel rims, with all signs of bling removed. I put one of the 426 covers over the jappafor comparison purposes and the yank is bigger all round but Tojo still looks the part.

You can see the #s on both pictures between the Vee above the flywheel . The 4V etc was cast in and the # stamped next to it. The rougher one has the carbie manifold. I am told the fuel drops out of the mix if you use a carbie on the injected manifolds. I bought one at xmas for another of my stalled projects but it was a fair bit rougher than I was hoping! Then a guy in town told me he had just sold a minter with a 5speed. Bugger !

trader_84, Jun 22, 11:46am
Wow! The more shiney one was bought as a 4v but I am beginning to think it might be a 5v. I and going for a look later on to see what I can see in the place you have indicated. It was bought as a 'minter' with a Supra 5 speed attached to it. Me and the lad are going to leak it down soon to see how 'mint' it really is.

it will be the difference between early and late engines. 2V and 3V will typically be the earlier engines as they were around first, but 3V 4V and 5V were produced concurrently for a while. The rocker cover which is oxidised looks to be a 5V engine. I had the same engine in my 1986 Century and I recall the rocker covers looking the same.

My brother had the 4v In his 32 ford coupe. Goes bloody hard those little motors.

trader_84, Jun 22, 4:16pm
The plot thickens . I have checked both engines. Both have the casting mark of '4V' on the block . but with obviously - different heads. The oxidized one came with a carb and the shiney one came with injection. Maybe there was a change over during mid series or something. Hmmmm. Someone will know.

rod-zone, Jun 22, 4:25pm
I sold one years ago to a guy in hamilton.it was a 4V with a 6v/71 supercharger bolted to it!/ also had a 5spd celica box

phillip.weston, Jun 22, 4:26pm
yes it would just be differences between early and late. The shiny rocker covers would have been polished - they aren't like that from the factory.

zephyrheaven, Jun 22, 5:15pm
petrolhead71 on here had a few at one stage, nice wee motors - parts becoming a bit scarce mind (bearings/ gaskets) worth a shot he buys up old & unusual on his trips to Japan - had a cool Cadillac flattie V8 from a tank at one stage, beaut in a rat I reckon - weighed a couple tonne tho

jason18, Jun 22, 7:06pm
My brother couldnt even find a head gasket he had to get his made. Was a right prick. We have a complete engine clearance book somewhere telling you all the specs etc. That was a prick to get too!
