I had a '96 Corolla wagon for nearly 13 years that I sold recently and had no major problems with it. Was going to get another small wagon but ended up buying a hatch as it's big enough for what I want.

Probably because they are often owned by boys who thrash them.

Subarus are great but you need to pick the right one that has been looked after. Most older subys in the 2k-5k price range have been thrashed. In your price range a non turbo that has been looked after would be a good buy.

Just under $4K but that included the Prorack Whispbar roof racks which were not even 6 months old and snow chains. It had just under 190K on it and was very tidy.

$1500 plus insurance, maintanace, rego, wof, petrol, tyres etc etc etc. You don't just buy a car, you buy a commitment

Yeah your right she has seperate savings for those things .I feel for my girl as she got a AA report when she brought the pug . All the report said was the steering wheel was no in alignmen . The report didnt pick up on a stuffed clutch, cut spring, broken engine mount, and NO rear brakes . She paid for all those thing to be fixed . The AA paid for a new clutch kit only. Then she was attacked by a few youths with a sledge hammerwhile she was in the car . She was pulled from the car and beaten up . Since then all the glass replaced, also a doorand back on the road . She did have insurance but only third party as the car wasnt over a thousand dollars. So she didnt get any help for that. Then since then over 1600.00 has been spent then the clutch went again another 400 .00 . Also another 400.00 for repeat work from the 1600. spent as it still had the same problem turned out to be the master cylinder was stuffed and keeping the brakes on. So I think she well in truely knows there is costs involing owning a car. Oh she put 4 new tyres on and 3 servers etc.

I think the better lesson here is to get the next car checked out properly and buy a vehicle that is well maintained. Rather than trying to buy some mythical brand that will magically require no maintenance.
The AA and VTNZ as you have discovered are just a bunch of idiots trying to cash in on the uninformed. Best to find a good competent non-biased mechanic to check vehicles out for you, should be cheaper too.
I would start looking at $1500 I have bought some lovely vehicles for even less than that. However, I check them out thoroughly and choose good cars that are under priced because the brainwashed masses are all falling over themselves to pay too much for this or that brand.

BTW, my daily driver is a top of the range 1999 model wagon with 120K on the clock in great condition that even came with a near new set of tyres. I paid $1200.

. watch suzukis carefully/motors not in the same class as nissan or toyota, and they MUST be run with anti freeze. i bought one and had endless trouble heater core went, frost plugs blew out- all because a MECHANIC who owned it before me ran it without anti freeze.

All cars should have anti freeze and also a good rust inhibitor as well. Especially for this cold weathe, any car that is run on plain water will eventually cost you big bucks.

old adage : you get what you pay for. A car at 2 1/2 grand might do a couple of years. A 6 k one (she has the deposit) might do 4 years and still on sell for a couple of grand at the end. Dozen factors come into the equation. Happy hunting.
