Quieter actually. An engine can only produce so many noise particles, so by allowing these particles to have more room as they exit the engine, the noise is diminshed. Removal of the mufflers helps this even more by taking restrictions out of the exhaust system.

Not only louder, but very rattly, raspy and droany if it's not done right - more so on an n/a engine.
