Viewed a Toyota camry yesterday. According to warrant sticker it is valid till 4/01/13. Stcker looked not quite right and all tyres including the spare were not warrantable. This was at an Auction place in The Mount. Are we able to go to the place were the warrant was issued from and check on this! All sounds a bit susspect to me.

Anyone can change 4 good tyres over for bad ones, may not be the wof garage, common trick.

Doubt you can prove anything if indeed it was a slack WOF inspection done for a mate or whatever, as tyres can all be swapped by the owner after the WOF is issued and the WOF place will deny everything.
If it was a counterfeit WOF sticker though you could check if the WOF is valid on Carjam or similar.

I never understand this dodgy WOF logic, sure it gets you a sticker on the window, but no defence if stopped by the law as the vehicle has to be kept at WOF standards at all times. If the seller does this, shame on them as who would want to intentionally sell a car with unsafe tyres!

Ask to see the wof inspection sheet. it will have the tyre tread depths recorded on it.

A warrant only really proves the vehicle was roadworthy at the time of issue

Exactly.Ask to see the wheelbrace.

so true maybe the highway patrol car we were following last night needs a reminder, 1 taillight and 1 stoplight outand he didnt indicate when turning left or right, maybe! those who enforce the law need to be reminded of whats the law

Its possibly the buddy system at work here.lol.yep common for some folk to switch tyres back an forth .also not unheard of to issue a wof with a final rust warning.so the prospective buyer finds themselves with an unwarratable junker 6 months later.lol.basically dont buy it if your not happy about the condition of the vehicle.or get someone who knows what theyre looking at to inspect the vehicle before you purchase.another way is tell the seller you want to run it thru a wof even though its allegedly already got a new wof.basically do your homework.Ive seen cars that blatantly shouldnt have a wof get one.but doing your own wof gives you an independent opinion.

Just tell the cay yard your concerns and specify that (you may have to pay $40, so what) you will buy the car with a brand new warrant only( take it to get a new one), if they want o sell you the car then no problems.

In what way were the tyres not compliant! Did you take a tread depth gauge with you and check them across all the wear tracks if they had wear indicator bars, and check them all the way around! Were there other defects like steel belts hanging out or size differences etc! In what way did the sticker "not look quite right"!

OP as others have said its possible the owner did swap the tyres after the wof so you judge the vehicle on the strenth of what you see. so its a camry needing $400 ish in new tyres. -if otherwise tis a good car then bid accordingly. The ACTUAL wof -the sticker in the window is a totally different issue. -If it is a fake /boogied wof then argueably fraud has been committed by someone.Any testing station CAN check when the WOF actually runs out on the car so go ask the question so you know whats going on. argueably you could be naughty and listen carefully to what the auctioneer says -if they say it has a wof till jan 13 and indeed it doesn;t then they are liable. its a funny twist in the auction laws. its buyer beware but based on what the auctioneer tells you.

Yes, go and see them.they`ll crap themselves if its dodgy
I once bought acar at Turner`s auctions, for $5000, had a brand new WOF,Turners used that as a good selling point. The WOF was dodgy, Turner`s didn`t want to know about it, so i took it further, the WOF sticker said it had been issued by a big , well known car dealership, however, they had never owned the car and the WOF sticker, was stolen and written out by a workshop employee, who did.i ended up getting a replacement car, which was on their lot for $7999, so i was 3 grand better off, but i always reckoned it was hush money.

WOF sticker looked ragged on the dges and from the front almost like it was in 2 pieces joined together. We are giving it a wide berth. Salesmans answer is that they dont do the warrants.

wished all warrants should be got through vtnz or testing stations only.

Makes a bit of a joke of the yard name as I'm guessing its that not so safe place.

Is the rego on the wof label the same as the car it is attached to ! Couldve had a new windscreen fitted ! Beware when issuing authority uses an overlay over the label, the wof label can easily be removed by peeling the overlay off. I believe there is evidence of a scam like this happening in Wellington at the moment.

Is there evidence or is it just a belief you hold!

Ha ha i agree and yesterday I querryed one on it. I got pulled up on way home because he thought I was on my phone but I wasnt I was resting my head on my arm on the windowsill as I had a headace from the flu. I offered him my phone to view as proof but he declined and proceeded to inspect the rest of car which was fine. He clearly wanted to ticket me for somthing and was grilling me, during this I pointed out to him that HE failed to indicate off the roundabout when he was following me before pulling me over, (he would of seen me do it right infront of him) needless to say that was the end of the inspection and I recived a very foul look before he departed.

Yeah - I sensed the slight taste of regurgitated vomit in my mouth when I read that, but it was probably just reflux from the mutton pie I had for lunch.
