Thats a pretty rare HQ.

Last time I saw one of those for sale was 15 years ago in Orewa. they wanted $6K or so then. Bit pricey at $30K.$20K maybe

What's the difference! Wheels and stripes!
murray55,
Jul 24, 6:37pm
In what way is it rare .the fact that it was used for the Commonwealth Games and has some stripes down the side .yeah that should be worth 30 grand for sure !

When you consider a POS one can fetch $10K these days as a "Project" a running one (with a legit V8) could be worth anything. But not my $30K
murray55,
Jul 24, 6:49pm
hahaha have to agree with that .surely no one buys these 98% finished, will fly through wof, summer cruiser blah blah POS for anywhere remotely being asked. Or maybe they do. They eventually disappear after months on TM so I guess someone buys them !
whqqsh,

agree, quite sought after (by others lol)
gman35,
Jul 24, 6:52pm
Well it's an old Aussie V8 , so it can't fail to sell to someone at even twice the price !

Its a unique piece of history and obviously a locally created limited edition, albeit being only a 253 auto HQ sedan with stripes and rostyles, it will either sell at that price or it won't. I find the silly asking prices for stuff that was made in the millions and were TOTALLY unremarkable like 6 cyl Mustangs, Impalas etc, far more amusing.

It's a large, crude, no-frills 4-door sedan with a lot of parochial hype inflating the price of it quite ridiculously.
Pretty typical of Holdens in general, actually.

Dunno how people get off on HQ's, theyre deadset fugly! theres thousands of waaaaaaaayy cooler iron around, 30k gets you quite a respectable lookin piece of US tin, IMO HQ's in top condition should only be worth about 2k, about as much appeal as a toyota Corrolla

No the HQ was quite an iconic design. Beautiful thin A pillars and nice C pillar structure, realised best in the 2 door variant. The wagon and ute also looked good, the angular structure suited the rear styling in both models. Probably the worst design aspect of the HQ was the high waistline (plus of course the hideous statesman that used ute taillights).
As for value, like anything, only worth what someone would pay. I personally don't see the point in the 253 engine, would rather have a warmed over 6 cyl manual.
Good luck to the seller, nice bit of Holden history

I think its a fantastic example and could well be worth that to the right buyer.
Never was too fond of the 253 engine either though. they made a nice sound but were very slow and in my experience very unreliable - kinda like a V8 'lite' experience. The 186's were a good engine.

Were they numbered! if not, and if this junker sells for 30k, I'm buying a few HQs and gettin out the spraycans, I'm gonna be rich I tell ya RICH!
franc123,

FFS it isn't a junker at all, it is clearly a very good example of the model, what a totally rude comment.

I'd like to know why they didn't just put the W in the "LO FUEL" light. There's enough room for one.

the common wealth games cars alsohad power steer and gauges out of premier I think, instead of warning lights, plus the stripes etc, the cracked dash ,dirty engine bay and door panels with speakers in them detract from it's value ,whatever that might be
lookoutas,

It's value will be set by someone who wants it. If you don't like it, or wouldn't pay the bucks, don't fret.
I like it because of it's history - but I wouldn't want it unless I could steal it and resell it for a profit. I've just done 2K's worth of work on an HQ that had been brought for 24K and had 3K's worth of big wheels fitted, that then required more room under the rear wheel arches. Could I own and enjoy driving that car!NO. But I respect the owners tweaks.

BUT, if you get a big rectangle box put a smaller rectangle box on top, cut a hole in the bonnet put a fiberglass scoop through it add some stripes and a wing and a few numbers and letters everyone creams themselves over it. They were flash in there day and copied as other so called legends are.

Goes to show how "loved"they are.

They did, but it stuffed the handling, so out it came again

Definitely the better buy of the 2. (and I love HQs)
