F1 - The Killer Years

I was deeply shocked by that show. It really brought home the personal nature of the deaths I'd read about in books and the famous drivers I'd seen pictured who are no longer with us through ignorance/negligence/bad luck.

And it showed a whole new side to Colin Chapman.

A change to see something on the box where I could recognise all the faces in it, and I remember listening to many of those races on the radio.

I had never seen that David Purley footage. What a great bloke, sadly he died in an aerobatics prang a few years later.

I haven't seen it yet but just shows how much safety standards have improved over the years, yet I do remember Jackie Stewart getting a lot of stick at the time when he pushed for improved safety.
Purley was an amazing bloke.

yep !ol'colin / chis not so well known design theorywas, build it so light that it looked as if it would brake, and if it did, build the replacement a tad stronger !did the cover that in the doco !

Chapman's ideal was a car crossing the finishing line first then the wheels etc falling off!

It was a stunning revelation that program, attitudes to safety have changed so much in the past 50 60 years, but do remember this was post war and there was a different attitude to the value of life of boys doing dangerous things.

If was shocker - I only saw last part with that race car burning with the poor guy in in it and race driver trying to rescue him - The officals did absolutely nothing and race driver trying to rescue him is really pissed off!

Go watch the Senna Doco - I think he was last guy to die in F1 in 1994 and he was an advocate for safety too - Brilliant doco
