They intend to replace it, its bounces okay as long as its done asap i dont see the issue. Money can be tight at times at least she will not get a fine for no wof, then asap it can be fixed. Of course it should be fixed but from the money side of view it can be hard.

No! They get there WOF and forget about it.

While I agree when money is hard to come by a fine for no wof would delay getting the car legal.

WeeellllllI got told last warrent (5 months ago) that the front struts were leaking and really should be a fail but best get them done next time.and yes they do clunk abit over bumps etc. So I was pricing them today and repco $345 each but would do them for $250 each but BNT was $184 each. wonder were I will go.

if you can't afford the upkeep on your car, you shouldn't own one, you are a blight on society and a hazzard to those that do bother to keep legal.

Dang it I hate it agreeing with someone being just nasty but yea IMO its easy really. Struts leaking. Replace the strut. If you can't afford it then don't drive the car untill you can. Sorry but I do NOT agree with crazyhorse. Although a damper with no oil left is a danger in its own right a leaking front strut is happilly and busilly dumping its oil down the leg and onto--Yep the brakes. -I just recently had a vehicle come through like that Brake pads soaked in shock oil. Go figure it diddn't have good brakes.

If things were so easy for some it would be a great and perfect world. while some just wont maintain there car for whatever reason they choose there are others who may well struggle with the cost of something unexcpected like struts. who checks there struts every week! and some wouldnt even know what they were looking at anyway. Thats why some depend on the WOF to pick up issues. Not everyone is a mechanic. So you get your check and they say, sorry you need front struts. As I did I priced them and taking the highest price of $345 each (yes some would except this price as correct to) you suddenly have a $690 plus gst plus prob another $200 to fit them plus gst so you end up with a bill of $1023 odd dollers. OUCH!.Now on a limited income of say $440 to $600 a week for some thats gunna hurt if you dont have the savings to cover it. Now yea they dont have to drive the car of course but with 3 kids and all the other normal life stuff thats not a practiable opption sometimes. And saddly through what some will say was poor life choices we are not all brain surgens earning $600000 a year and shafting the system. Now for me I shopped around and got the struts for $423and will do it myself so Im lucky that way but others arnt. But I supose they should have attendedstrut replacement night classes for just such an event. And while leaking struts could be considered dangerous I dont think it is any where as bad as no brakes or shagged discs or screwed wheel bearings etc etc. Maybe if some of the retailers and so on stopped ripping people off we all may be a little better off.

No not a different issue at all. A clear danger from a leaking strut is shock oil running down onto the brakes. it goes without saying that the struts performance has been compromised. How much decided by the time its been leaking for

Gunhand we don't live in a perfect world. But a leacking strut in an older car is hardly an unexpected item for replacement. perhaps I'm so Blase about it because I'm replacing struts regularly. Incidently The MOST expensive set I've ever fitted was a set of Pressage shocks. $750 for a pair and that was hand built. For rears Its less than $200 a set and fronts usually $400 a set. I do strip em and rebuild em myself

Thanks to those that have been helpful. For anyone making judgement about my ability to own/fund repairs, thanks fir being such concerned wankers but you are way off track, the money is not a concern in not getting them done. I'm not going to explain why here as I am not accountable to you, and yes I understand why a leaking shock is a problem, that would be why I bothered to explain that it still has bounce. Again, thanks to those who answered my question, all 4 will be replaced the weekend after the warrant is due, I just don't want to risk having it parked on a public road without wof (tickets etc).

oh, and the car is parked up, but still on the side of the road, hense the need for warrant first.

That is fine, at least you are being pro active heck not many people would even know they have leaking shocks without the wof man telling them so. And getting a 200 fine will only delay you getting it legal anyway.

Given money isn't the issue then why not leave the car at the place you are getting the shocks fitted! This solves the wof ticket issue and means the shocks are getting replaced. You could then take the car for its WOF. If by some freak of chance you were stopped directly on your way to the wof place you will have a handy receipt showing you were rectifying a wof issue Incidently -sorry if this comes across as contracending but the spring back is the spring working not the damping. You test the damping by pushing the corner of the car down a few times and see if it continues to boing up and down a few times-if it does the damper is goosed
