expect petrol to remain useable stored in a 20l gas can! It's my emergency supply.

20L isn't a lot. maybe 3-6 months. depends where stored. also check your insurance, you may find that there is a clause in it about inflamable liquids.

Insurance, thats a good point.
it's not alot but if a big quake comes and the pumps shut down for a few days or more it means I'm not stranded.

It also depends where you are in relation to the fuel when a disaster hits,fuel at home, you 200kms away! ,no better off!

You are better off just making sure you have at least half a tank of fuel in your car.
