Hi there was reading the book and aparantly you can have it so when you turn the cars lights on the brightness wil dim my 98 spacio toyota what wil the wires to be connected up for this to work properly be!

It's a feature on SOME stereos, generally entry level stereos don't get it.
It's called Illumination, it's an Orange wire on the stereo harness. it needs to be connected to the cars illumination circuit.

Hat colour wild that be on my car! Brown!

gadgit3, Aug 31, 6:48pm
Which will be the green wire on the cars harness. so Orange wire to Green wire = dim at night

gadgit3, Aug 31, 6:49pm
Brown is earth

andrea_w, Aug 31, 6:51pm
I'd strongly advice you test the wire before connecting anything to it.
Brown is definitely Earth in Toyota.

The reason I say test it is I have seen wrong factory colours on cars. it's rare, but it happens.
I used to install car audio for a living, I pretty much knew all colours for most cars but I would ALWAYS test them, regardless.

gadgit3, Aug 31, 6:54pm
Nah it's Green. 100% on that one has been since I started working for Toyota.

the way you find out would be to get a test light, clip one end to a common ground, then switch the lights on, then with the pointy end of the test light, probe all the wiring harness's wires too see if the test light illuminates, once you have found the 2 or 3 wires that show up with power, take those wires, then switch off the lights, then retest the 2-3 wires that you found previously that had power and find out which one now doesnt have power, that one that DOESNT have power will be the wire that you need to hook up to the stereo , Sorry if im unclear, ( im apparently dyslexic and stuff that sounds right to me doesnt to others LOL )

Umm lol so test the wires with the lights on and wat eva 1 ights up tester is the wire toConnect to orqnge headunit wiresry stupid ipod touch

andrea_w, Aug 31, 7:04pm
I don't doubt that at all. but I have seen (as an eg) a brown illumination wire on a Toyota.
It's a real curveball and it is rare.
That's not the only reason I always test every wire when fitting a stereo. I've just learned to never assume anything wiring related on cars and testing every wire means I am absolutely 100% confident my wiring is always spot on.

gadgit3, Aug 31, 7:06pm
Re 9

No cause you will have 3 wires for the car that will be +ve. Green is the one you want.

lugee, Aug 31, 7:06pm
Don't forget to test with the lights off too, as there is also two other wires providing power. Mix them up and you might have a head unit that only turns on with the lights on.

gadgit3, Aug 31, 7:08pm
Yea but I have the wiring dig sitting infront of me. lol 100% confident

andrea_w, Aug 31, 7:13pm
.and if the factory plugs are missing!

gadgit3, Aug 31, 7:16pm
Then the green wire is just an extention of the park light system. dam near all solid green wires in the ipsum is a park lamp wire so you'll be hard pressed to throw a quick connector on a random green wire and it not be a park lamp wire.

gadgit3, Aug 31, 7:18pm
Lol then what wires would you suggest to probe if there is no harness!

richard198, Aug 31, 7:22pm
Agree. Always test. Assume nothing (I'm an ex alarm installer as well)
"Assumption is the mother of all fuckups!"

inkapuka, Aug 31, 7:29pm
So do i just connect the 2 wires together or do i havee to connect more

gadgit3, Oct 12, 8:54am
Refer post 4. from your stereo take the orange wire
From your car take green wire (pin 11 in factory plug)
Connect these two wires and your stereo will dim when you switch your lights on at night.
