So this is mostly aimed at the Trade Me Moderators or site managers or whatever but basically with the introduction of the new LAMS (Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme) will you be introducing a new search category for motorcycles to help us find the right bike!
I'm looking at getting my Class 6 and a bike shortly after the new laws come in and Im looking at half the bikes and going is this a LAMS bike or not! Mostly because of things like is it a Suzuki GS500F or just the GS500!
Even if its just a tick box for the seller to mark saying whether it is LAMS or not would be great.
Cheers

What is this LAMS about, you can only ride up to 250cc on class 6 learners and restricted, i had mates with 250 twin 2strokes that would eat most 500cc maybe they are excluding them from the learner range.

Yes. The two stroke 250s like the RGV, NSR, Aprilia are being excluded.

stupid rules, a learner on an rgv250 is far safer to the general public than one in a wiz-bang turbo car full of mates
Riiiiggggggggghhhhhhhht, those RGV's .huge safety record, no one want to thrash them or race them uh huh.

Go to the help page, down the bottom there is a suggestion box.

thats not what I said. SAFER for the public I said. Your sitting at the lights and a young idiot is about to crash into you, do you want to be hit by A: a 1500kg car, or B: a 180kg motorbike! The type of kid that now wont be able to buy an rgv250 under the new rules will most likely be buying a car, and Im betting they wont be happy with a 1000cc non turbo 1980 lancer.

Trouble with that LAMS scheme though is the bikes are not allowed to be modified in anyway. Hope learners don't get caught out by their insurance companies with that. At least its a step in the right direction.

The LAMS approved list is still not a "final" list, as there may be more models added, or models removed, depending on whether the specific power-to-weight ratios meet the new rules. Also, the only way Mr Plod will know if you are riding a compliant bike, when he pulls you over, is to look at the licence label. If you are riding a GSX650FL2 you fail, but if it's a GSX650UFL2 then it's compliant.Good point about the a GS500 vs a GS500F, as the only difference is the fairing. It's going to be a bit of a nightmare until it settles in.

What i'm wondering tho' is, if the bike isn't on the 'excluded' or 'included' "list" but is a 250, what happens then!
I have a '88 Honda CD250uj, and it aint on either.

There is no included list for 250 and under. If it's 250cc, and not on the ban list, its ok.

Yeah, i guess i could've worked that one out for myself if i actually thought 'bout it LOL.

That beast with its 70 plus screaming ponies is bound to be on the banned list. I suspect theres gonna need to be someone with common sense working through it all--or someone who REALLY knows a lot about bikes. The CD250 is mechanically a CB250t which morphed into the cb250n then theres the new version which is still called a CB250 There 9is no way its power to weight is gonna be over the limit for lams

70! Holy cow kaz', optimistic much LOL
Was just curious because there would be an arguement (by the lawmakers) that techically if it's NOT on either of THEIR "lists" then it doesn't exist.

There is no list of under 250cc, except those that do NOT comply. In other words, all bikes under 250cc DO comply, unless it's on the non learner-legal list.
The non-learner -legal list is likely to change as they find more non-compliant bikes. Can't think of any off the top of my head but there are bound to be some.

There are a number of bikes on the LAMS list that shouldn't be, such as some of the larger capacity supermotard style bikes (Husaberg FS650 for example) as they exceed the 150kw per ton rating that is in place. The FS650 is 47kw and 123kg, add the allowed 90kg for rider/gear and you have 220kw per ton - only slightly over their own limit. Also there are a number of bikes that SHOULD be on the list (it's basically a weeded out version of the Australian LAMS list) that aren't like the CX400 where the 500 is legal or the GL500 where the 400 is legal. There are far too many options available in bikes to make the list work. The "unmodified" ruling will also make it very difficult, no aftermarket mufflers or free flow air filters, where they haven't stated what modifications are actually allowed. If it's NO modifications (as stated) so many older bikes won't be legal in the eyes of the law (should they decide to be "letter of the law" strict). Sure, you can apply to have bikes approved, but the list just ain't right.
