Kept her cool pretty well, considering.

Gear lever wouldn't move.

mantagsi, Aug 28, 3:09pm
Hahah nice one, but hey I guess that was the only way to make the point :)

Happened to me in my T bucket once, smoke off the front tyres from braking while smoke off the spinning rears, luckily this started at only about 50kph & I gave it a bit to get past another car when the pedal dropped to the floor so had enough time to reach the kill switch Id just had installed for the strip (BTW the one I had was just a battery cutout which doesnt kill bugger all when running so a proper one that kills the coil really is the way to go)

It was not a rare fault on the PA Vauxhalls. It happened to me and 2 friends in the '60s. It was a mechanical linkage that feel out of its hole and applied full throttle. In those days, we could actually turn off the key and slam the clutch and brakes on at the same time. Plus we were young men, not sheilas. :)

vtecintegra, Aug 28, 5:08pm
So the driver says.

What's the bet there won't be any fault found with the stop start and gear shifter mechanisms once the vehicle is examined

a.woodrow, Aug 28, 5:55pm
It will be this.

Having worked for toyota through the "unintended acceleration" debacle I got quite a run down on all the situations in which this can occur. the pedal gets jammed under rubber (usually) mats. Interestingly when a car magazine in america tried out stopping a new camry with foot flat on gas. They found even after a couple of goes they were able to successfully stop the car at full noise just with hard braking. they also noted that pumping the brakes or tapping them lightly wouldn't work as the brakes overheated.

I know since these issues, toyota have designed cut outs if the brakes and accelerator are being pressed at the same time.

Because it is all controlled by a can-bus computer that says you cant shift gear or stop the engine because it is having a bit-fit.

To add to the fun it could apply the brakes, put the wipers on, put your seat forward and steer to the left.

Funnily enough a mate of mine bought an Aprilia in Australia and after a big service, the throttle stuck open (turns out the dealer had stuffed up something), Anyway, we had a conversation:

Me: Why didn't you turn the key off!
Him: Didn't want to take my hand off the bars
Me: Why didn't you hit the kill switch!
Him: Can't reach it properly when riding
Me: Why didn't you pull the clutch in!
Him: .

People panic - how many times have you seen someone stand on the brakes in a skid instead of releasing the picks and steering out of it.

Diesel runaway!

pollymay, Aug 29, 1:27am
I had a car open up on me once, just clicked into neutral then pulled into a service station going WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA DA-DA-DA-DA-DA off the rev limiter.

the-lada-dude, Aug 29, 5:21am
well so far :::thats3 xfords,a kia andPA vaux that have failed ! mmmmmm, what does this tell you !

friendly_prawn, Aug 29, 5:29am
jeeze that seems like absolute madness. Accidents happen! So blame the manufacturers of the bat because its not made of wood!
One wonders how a judge could be so thick!

markthesparky, Aug 29, 5:31am
How are you susposed to do a burnout now then!, or take off quickly if it,s a auto. i hope they put a speed sensor on there, otherwise expect to see lots of late model toyotas stalled at the lights

dave653, Aug 29, 7:09am
I've got myself out of impending shit 3 times by getting OFF the brake, returning steering to 'yes, I have some', and driving around/out of a mess.

turton, Aug 29, 7:24am
bahahaha

trogedon, Aug 29, 6:10pm
Just a ruse to drive fast for a long time I think.

cowlover, Aug 29, 6:28pm
Buy a Lada.

tnt423, Aug 29, 7:03pm
On my old mans car you can hop out with the proximity key and keep driving.

pollymay, Aug 30, 1:39am
I'd like to see this, namely the bit where you hop out and keep driving. Think about how this would work very carefully, because I'm for one having trouble picturing how that would work

pauldw, Aug 30, 5:18am
It's you hop out and someone else could keep driving.

This is one of those stories that you'd have to follow for months before the truth comes out.
