Hi there, just trying to figure out if it is worth getting one of these fabricated locally or if it will be cheaper to import one already built:

The metal is 1.75 X .120 inch 1026 alloy drawn over mandrel. Mounting plates are 3/16" thick. If I were to import it, it would include all bolts etc (14 in total + a tube spacer on each side)

stab at $500

timmo1, Aug 24, 3:19am
Would that be all inclusive do you reckon! The bar is powder coated as well and I wouldn't be able to supply exact dimensions/template (although the car its going into would be available)

rod-zone, Aug 24, 6:29am
Where would you be importing it from! how much is it to buy from the manufacturer!

toppo1, Aug 24, 7:04am
Would be allot easier to import it, guaranteed to fit $500 would be a rough guestamate

gammelvind, Aug 24, 7:24am
Looks like a set of stocks! What are you really into!

intrade, Aug 24, 7:30am
the problem is when somone makes these mass it be cheaper then just a one off , Just one would probably more be 1500$

intrade, Aug 24, 7:31am
What is it for

jmma, Aug 24, 7:33am
Looks like rollbar (o:

Importing from the USA (Nth Carolina)- I've asked them for a shipping quote to NZ so I can estimate the total cost better, but would imagine it would work out to around 700-800 NZD landed!

timmo1, Aug 24, 8:13am
For a NB MX5.it's a bit of a pig to get something that is functional and sturdy- Room for back stays are limited because of the solid glass window in the softtop. The seatbelt towers also get in the way.

timmo1, Aug 24, 8:15am
They are listed at 446 USD without shipping.so if they could be made for 500 NZD that would be a better deal. I've also bought some FD RX7 seats which are slightly taller than the MX5 seats so would want to slightly extend the hoops up to cover the tops

unclejake, Aug 24, 9:15am
One would hope that the roll protection pictured extended adequately above your helmeted head already!

timmo, being in my neck of the woods. Can I suggest you have a look for John Key (Not the Prime Minister just same name) on google. I forget the name of is company but he is out at Te Puna and brings a container in every month or so. If you are not in a mad rush its the sort of thing you could have shipped to his depot in the States, you might be surprised how reasonable the shipping from there to NZ is.

He is a real car guy too and a real good sort to deal with.

jk1968 on here. Good dude.

treachug, Aug 24, 8:06pm
and with buying that kit in the usa you still get the free hat - try bargaining for a hat from the local maunfacturer.lol

plasticboys, Aug 24, 8:36pm
one off would be just over $1000 lots off around $250 . china $50

the-lada-dude, Aug 24, 9:08pm
if your thinking of using your car in racing events, you better check out the manz rules on roll over bar construction and approved material specs. i'm not sure what a 1026 alloy is but at this stage i don't think it would comply.

tigra, Aug 24, 10:28pm
Dont forget you will be liable for GST and all the other new add-ons Customs and MAF charge these days.

twink19, Aug 24, 10:45pm
If you are using the car for motor sport events, check that it complies with motor sport nz regulations, with regard to hoop diameter andsteel specs

timmo1, Aug 25, 2:06am
depends how tall you are to be honest.as I say, the MX5 is a bit of a bastard to make a roll bar for. Space is limited in every dimension. Im just under 6ft tall and if I sit up, my head is line with the top of the current seats.so with a helmet there really aint much room to get a barin under the soft top.

timmo1, Aug 25, 2:08am
Nope, just track days. If it was for racing I'd need a fully fabricated cage rather than just a bar as far as I know.

timmo1, Aug 25, 4:07am
Cheers Jazz- Ill look him up if shipping from them is too much

timmo1, Aug 25, 10:02pm
What is most of that extra cost! I.e. I can supply most measurements so hopefully there would be minimum stuffing around measuring/designing and just the time spent to actually cut and weld thesteel.

h.e, Aug 25, 10:21pm
when things like this are mass produced they are made in a jig.minimal stuffing around measuring things,no squaring things up,no double checking.all the holes will be drilled in a jig or the parts may turn up profile cut with the holes already there. again no stuffing around measuring marking out. one bloke could maybe fab 5-6 of these a day with jigs.without it may takea day to produce 1
