Sounds like the free market in action to me.
You needed a tyre then and there, the tyre shop provided.
Had you checked the tyres a week ago knowing you had a long trip coming up, you could have shopped around and replaced both for the price of one in Greymouth.

Unfortunately this is what Mainlanders have to take daily. Cheaper to buy & freight from NI. In defence, though, most common sizes are readily available & not too overpriced.
