Thanks so much for all of your comments.So apparently its not the transmission but maybe the transmission cooler!There is oil in the coolant and they have sent the radiator (or part of it) away to get tested.

if you buy a automatic then you just need the money to have the transmission rebuilt. other option is a manual but they mostly run dualmass flywheel and thats also over 2 grand to replace , cheaper if you order your self from germany but otherwise they want 2k just for the clutch and flywheel and it be 4500 for a automatictrans rebuild

It is quite common for both oil coolers to fail, generaly the trans wont suffer as it leaks oil into the coolant, If I ever owned an auto mk4 I would be converting it to manual, the trans is just crap even with servicing they dont last that long, parts for a manual conversion can be had for less than half the price of a trans rebuild

well that is the price they wanted for my clients T4 tdi we got the new dmf clutch bolt on luke for 449 euro plus shipping ex germany few years ago Where do you get the solidmass flywheel for a grand! i am sure my tdi still runs a dmf and i was gona getsolide one from "darkside development uk " when it fails

yea probably not for my one i dont think the usa has had unit injector engines with 6 speed manual transmission on jetta models . my one is the bora= jetta mk4-golf-sedan

I know what a bora is, the 6speed is an 02m which the yanks got, as its the same as the tt, s3 ect

yea i did not try to imply that you dont know what a bora is i posted it for others who read this probably also and dont know as the jetta namewas discontinued in europe but the us seem to have been keeping the name

yea they decided to keep things simple for the yanks and seeing as how the mk2 jetta was so popular they kept the name
