Wrong year registered

Just got a new toy and it was mis-registered.Have just got off phone to LTSA who said as it was done overseas there is no way we can change the year over here.It is out by 4 years. It is a 1996 mx5, so you can tell that it is wrong as it has pop up lights. It has been registered as a 2000.LTSA is telling me nothing we can do, but just want to 100% confirm this. Thanks

Well I suppose it shouldnt be a problem as long as you make the next owner understand the situation when you sell

Obviously it's not a fresh import and the car has been here a number of years,so was it a matter of the previous owner not informing you! If it was done 'overseas', they must have known.
Are you able to provide more info!

if you look at the manufacturers i.d. plate under the bonnet that should tell you the year,

Is it that it was sold but not registered in Japan for 4 years after manufacture!I imported a 97 pulsar which was actually a 95 model as for some reason the above was the case.

The car was originally from Japan, it then went to the UK before coming to NZ.LTSA said that the paper work from the UK show that it was registered there as a 2000.They did say that it may have sat on a yard for 4 years in Japan hence the year difference. It is just a personal thing of wanting it to be a 1996.I hope we don't ever sell it, as the reason I bought it was to get it back to original condition with original parts to keep.It is just interesting that I had never heard of this before especially with a difference of 4 years.thanks

It's more common than you think. If it's something collectable or out of the ordinary buyers would understand.
I remember ford sierra changed there models half way through the year which created similar problems for many owners.

At least it is not the other way around (ie 1996 car, but registered 4 years older!)
