LOL, was only having a wind because of the Harley engine/sports frame situation.
I have only ridden one once, as disconcerting as the concept might be I liked the sound it made. What I didn't like was the tail wagging under me as I tried to brake from high speed for a corner.
I am not really a bike person but my guess is that could have been the suspension not being set up for me, that or I was trying to ride it like my Vespa but at twice the speed.

there was one for sale on trademe that had a P76 in it.I looked at the waythe rear diff had been set up and it looked like he had used a ton of steel to fabricate the rear part of the chassi (for want of a better discription)
So if they handled badly before I wonder what one that was rear end heavy with all the extra power of a p76 v8 up front would be like.

a P76 4.4 litre V8 weighs the same as a Ford 1600 OHC motor

yep, I sold one once. Two guys walked up the drive, handed over the dosh and then picked the engine up and they carried it down the drive no trouble at all, threw it on the back of their ute.I knew they were light, but I didnt realise just how light till I seen that.

in post 33 it was all the extra weight in the rear of the sptifire that I was worried about.

To answer your original question,this could be done up to get it road legal with a bit of effort. Looks like the car needs new floor pans (which you can still buy from UK) and then welded in . Then once repaired it would appear that this car would need to be certified by an engineer like you would do when building a low volume or modified car (I'm guessing here) By the time you've spent all this money I think you could get a pretty tidy example for a bit less and just enjoy driving it. There have been a few negative comments about Spitfires here , possibly by people who may not have owned one. I am a sucker for punishment and own one as well as a Herald. There are no real problems with them, the handling could have been better on the pre '71 models, but this was ironed out with the Mk IV and 1500 models. The suspension can be improved more so at reasonable cost if one is still uncomfortable with it. MG owners do not like to advertise the fact that Spitfire outsold MG Midget/Healey Sprite every year but one in their 18 yr s of production. MX5 s may lack "soul", but there's good bang for your buck in getting one of these. If you want reliability and don't like working on older cars {ie. maintenance) get one of these.

I'll just go and get the popcorn and wait.

Jap = performance + comfort + reliable + easy to drive + garage when it needs work
English = Character + soul + too many other reasons for either owning or not owning one + fix at home

Maybe would have been better altogether to continue with truck production and turn all the numerous single marque car factories into component suppliers. I believe the Leyland name was used to represent the entire production outfit as none of the original car companies could agree on a name. Pathetic.
Thinking about it now it was a hell of an opportunity lost to produce some decent vehicles, if only all the internal squabbling could be countered. One idea was bringing in the (South African!) Michael Edwards to lead the show - the unions accused the bosses of being too upper class and elitist to properly understand the problems facing the company. And the logistics - what a joke! The A60 Austin Cambridge and Morris Oxford, despite being virtually identical, were built in different factories.
I remember at college we used to hear of all the crazy things going on at British Leyland and laugh ourselves silly.
It was an opportunity lost all right.

In those days there wasntany choice,jap cars werereal crapthen ( the few that ever made it here .)Overseas funds to buy new car &near newused cost more than new .You dont know how lucky you aretoday.
