What ratio is this?

mackc, Sep 4, 2:25pm
I have a 1995 4x4 hilux diff i pulled out and its got 40 teeth, does any one know what ratio it would be

How many pinion teeth!

gmphil, Sep 4, 2:34pm
Should be stamped on the side of crown wheel

the-lada-dude, Sep 4, 3:24pm
divide the No of pinion teeth into the No of crown wheel teeth and there's your ratioEG ; 40 / 9=4.444or 41 / 10=4.1you will usually find one of the gears will have an odd No of teethwould someone like to tell him why !

So the teeth mesh in a different place each rev.

good boytop of class for u my lad . suprising how many mech don't know these things

so when 1 pinion tooth breaks it can destroy each & every other tooth on the ring gear in short order of time.

mokaubach, Sep 4, 4:21pm
Thats because they are trained to be spare parts fitters sadly.

well, not sure how to answer that one, most people using shear logic would be flummoxed with that statement. surely a broken tooth is going to damage the whole unit anyway.

well at the end of the day, a gear with one smashed tooth is as useful as one with all the teeth smashed so really makes no difference.

the-lada-dude, Sep 6, 8:20am
here's my logic, that one damaged tooth will have to try and bugger say
41 teeth as the gear set has odd No of teeth , where as even set , say 40/10 that one tooth will bugger 4 teeth much more quickly ,yes /no
