Servicing vs high km's

_b_unit_, Sep 9, 6:09pm
Hi there

I was just wondering, I've been told that high km's don't really mean TOO much if the cars been serviced regularly. Obviously high km's to a certain extent!

Could any one shed some light on this please!!

Thanks

high km's on a car used predominantly on the open road and regularly serviced, will generally be a much better car than a low km car that has nevr been out of town and never serviced.

Good and complete servicing obviously helps but how and where its been driven are big factors too. Getting a check by someone who is familiar with the model is wise, they will know what wears out at roughly what time and what a tight low km unit feels like, and give judgement from there. It should be obvious if something feels too loose generally or abused to an expert.

Thank you. I'm a chick buying a car so need to know as much as I can!

+1, A car that has only had 1 or 2 owners, done mostly open rd running as has allways been serviced will be better than a car thats done half the kms and not being looked after, my car has only had 2 owners befor me, they both had it for 7 years and took very good care of it,

It is not just servicing either. It is amazing just how much wear and tear there is on an "around town" car. Steering, suspension, brakes, clutch and gearbox or auto trans all get worked a lot harder in stop-start round town driving.
on the other hand, a car that regularly travels between timaru and chch for example ( total of about 5 corners) will have very little wrong with it with 350,00 kms on the clock

I agree with the points mooted above but . there are always exceptions to the rule. And I guess . some makes/models able to get away with more than others. I bought a rough looking abused piece of 4x4 that had/has a broken and inconsistant history, dents in every panel and an interior missing parts. The gas tank has been squashed upwards and the sills and bottom of the gaurds are creased from bottoming out on river boulders. I am 1000's of k's over its service interval (like heaps over) and 10's of 1000's of k's past its cam belt change due milage . and tomorrow I intend to take a trip from PN to Taurange return or another 800km. Am I worried! Nah . not really. I don't thrash it and I talk nicely to the little porker. The point is . some cars (like people) lead charmed lives. Just another perspective for ya.

Basically cold v hot running if a car has been run from Akl to Wgtn every month then it has allot of k's on it but hasn't used the brakes and has run hot most of the time. If a car has been run around town say 5k from work to home and over to a mates place in the weekend 7k away then it has been run mostly cold it's entire life. I was told 20 years ago to buy hot running cars not sure if it matters now though.

bunit. It would be usefull for giving you feedback if we had some sort of points of reference.
For example a 1966 simca with 700000miles on the clock may present a few issues
a 2009 mazda demio with 150000km on the clock not so much
