Do they clear every 2 years from date you pay each fine or is it 2 years from date of most recent fine. Just wondering because i got 2 fines late 2010 and 1 recently last month so will the demerits from 2010 clear this year or will i have to wait till 2014 for the whole lot to clear

Demerit points remain active on your licence record for a period of two years from the date of the offence.

Demerit points

Demerit points are given for all speeding infringements (except those recorded by speed camera), some traffic offences and for breaching licence conditions, eg a learner driver unaccompanied by a supervisor or a restricted driver carrying unauthorised passengers.

Points can also be allocated in conjunction with a court disqualification where the court chooses to disqualify a person for less than six months. For a full list of demerit points, go to Demerit points.

Demerit points remain active on your licence record for a period of two years from the date of the offence. However, if the court disqualifies you for a period of six months or more, any active demerit points recorded on your licence record at the time will be cancelled and will no longer contribute to your active demerit point total.

If you accumulate 100 or more active demerit points within any two-year period, your licence will be suspended for a period of three months and you will not be entitled to drive. The suspension period begins as soon as the demerit suspension notice is served on you by the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), the police or an NZTA authorised agent.

At the end of your demerit suspension, you??

Thats strangesays at end of demerit points supension unlicensed &need to reinstaeit . !I did 3 monthover 2 years agobutnothing was said aboutrelicensing. I thought only if lost it for over 12 months

smac, Sep 12, 2:06pm
The need to reinstate (after suspension or disqualification) came in first half of last year sometime I think. Hasn't always been that way, used to get your licence straight back .

Its a new scam they are running, cost $60 odd to "reinstate" your licence, so after your suspension is over you cant drive until that is done otherwise they will charge you with driving whilst diqualified and inpound the car ect

smac, Sep 12, 3:05pm
If by 'scam' you mean a method of getting people who get disqualified or suspended to pay for that process, whereas otherwise they pay nothing and you and I pick up the bill, then yeah I guess it's a scam.

00quattro00, Sep 12, 3:07pm
How is it not at over $60 when it cost around $30 to get a new card!

berg, Sep 12, 3:07pm
Yep, and to add fuel to this, its up to NZTA as to "if" they choose to give your licence back. Have just recently seen a guy refused his class 2-5 back as he has had too many demerit suspensions related to offending in heavy motor vehicles. He's allowed to reapply for his 2-5 in two years time. Won't be long before we see class 1 offenders facing the same thing.

smac, Sep 12, 3:11pm
Who do you think pays the guy to knock on your door to serve you! Or to print and post the warning letter about 50 demerits you were too stupid to take notice of! Now the guy that got suspended does, before it was everyone else.

Type "demerit points" into search

n1smo_gtir, Sep 12, 11:31pm
anyone got the 0800 number to check how many demerit points one got left!

elect70, Sep 13, 1:46pm
Since when has it been their discretionas to wether theygive it back .surley only court cando thatHe did the time&paid the penaltyso cant arbitarilyimpose further punismenton a whim of someerk at NZTAoverstepping hisautority .

smac, Sep 13, 2:15pm
Yeah I'd be kinda interested in that too. They can certainly do it for endorsements (i.e. it's up to them what is deemed 'fit and proper'), but I wouldn't have thought classes.
