Hi, what are the consequences of losing the vin plates from a vehicle!Just asking because my son is a panel beater and has been doing up an old car for a customer, at his place of work. All the trim bits have been put in a box but now it seems that the vin plates that came off the engine are missing. Thanks.

should only have 1 vin plate, if all is legit vtnz should be able to make another, or an entry certifier if vt dont do it where you are.

New place for VIN plates (o: Why would you take them off the engine , when they aren't there

You'll have to go through a VIN approval process. Contact AA or VTNZ

I dont know where they were actually, i am getting the story from my daughter in law.I dont know why it was taken off but it was.The car was being stripped right back and put together again.Nothing dodgy about it.She is saying that my son's boss is talking about having to get it revinned which will cost thousands, and making my son pay for it, although he is only an employee. Also the owner picked up the box of bits and then came back saying that the vin plate wasnt there. So who is to say that he didnt lose it anyway. But just wondered what the procedure would be if the plate is lost.Surely there is a record of the vin number against the registration plates!

Let me know when you find out. They can be had though . and for next to nothing. I remember seeing something at the PN Swapmeet one time . the guy was stamping them from his machine as you waited. I have a vehicle that is missing its VIN tag too. I bought a Lux for cheap (basically as parts) because it was a ruffy and had been derego'ed. It was complete and ran though. I looked around (look around right now because there are going to be some reading this that cringe, give an accusing stare or outright blab off at the mouth about someone elses business) I looked around for a live chassis and lucked into one that had been parted out. I verified everything through CARJAM, purchased then changed it into my name and put it on hold. Oh and forked over $14.95 or something for new plates. There is absolutely no way i am going to feed that gravy train called the LVV thingy anything if I don't have to. I'm basically going replace all of the missing parts from my 'parts collection' then go and get a WOF.Cert! Pffftt! There is too much of this BS and money rorting around already.

polly--is it in fact the VIN plate thAt was lost or was it the build plate! If it was in fact the VIN plate then as long as all the other stuff is in order it won't be a big job to create a new plate

Have had this happen with 2 full rebuilds. One lost, no one knows who or how. Owner had to end up buying a whole new car same make and model to get its plate. 2nd problem of sorts is, full panel and paint done but no photo history. Guy goes to get car on road (its all dead in the system) and cant. No certifier would pass the thing without seeing how it was put together. The job was done a number of years back and is as good as. Nothin dodgy was done to at all. So he has to remove ll the panel work or.or what! But after some research there a certifier who has camra prob thingy and he will look in up under and over with it. Otherwise he would have bee stuffed. Lesson, dont loose ya plate or let it go dead with out someone seeing the build or good photo history.

No I am not Pollymays auntie and my son is not Pollymay.Who the hell is Pollymay! :)Thanks for your answers, my son's boss is making a big deal of it so I guess it is going to be very costly.I will ring VTNZ tomorrow. thanks everyone

Its what kaz said . if its the VIN tag - they can replaced easy. Painters and Panelbeaters damage/paint/disfigure these things on occaision and replace them. The vehicle build data tags from the vehicle manufacture is different though . loss of those might prove troublesome but the thing to remember though is . nothing is suspect with this vehicle, right! Its not like its a ringer or something. There is nothing to hide and everything should be cross-cheakable (sp) Good luck.

muppets stole my car, removed and replaced the vin and chassis code. vtnz were more than happy to supply a new vin tag with a letter from the police saying why they had been removed and that the car was the car I said it was.

You have to assume someone's stolen that plate. Vehicle owner, Business owner, another employee. You'll never know. It never should've been removed. Don't pay for anything without a court order, even if the young fella loses his job over it.

bahaha, while you are at it, you might as well scan the rego slips and wof stickers, photo shop em and print them out, pray you don't get caught LOL.

Did the boss man tell him to remove the vin plate! if not then he shouldn't be doing it. it's not much different from angle grinding the chassis number and serial numbers off engines etc.
