Lowering Springs - Help

johnotrademe, Sep 25, 4:52pm
Hello everyone,

So i have a 1990 Mazda 323, and when i push down on the bonnet there is alot of movement towards the spring. I think the springs may need replacing! It's standard. Just wanted to know if it is the springs because if they need replacing i may as well get those lowering ones.

Any info appreciated!

Thanks!

I forgot to ask but if i where to lower legal size (100mm of the ground) will i need a cert to pass a WOF!

It's 100mm off the ground. Cert won't be required if you lower the car properly.

That's not possible as springs are captive at both ends. It sounds like your shocks are rooted.

ah geez :( Shocks arnt cheap :( I thought it would of been the springs :(

Shocks cost as much as springs, but when is your WoF due! If it fails on either, you can pop into Pick A Part and get some second hand struts for SFA. Don't spend too much money on an old car.

It just passed its WOF the other day at VTNZ, they are tough when it comes to passing wof, so it must be still ok, but to me it feels like it needs replacing. My friends station wagon had it quoted for $300 inc labour to do one shock. I wonder if it's hard to install a shock at home, or do we need special tools! *googles info*

push it hard won on one corner and count how often it bounces 3 or more bounces = it has got worn shocks . new shocks bounce maximum 1and a half time

323 mazda has struts you need a spring compressor probably best to just get good secoundhand units unless you keep the car another 5 or more years.

Go on you tube, and look up Eric The Car Guy. And yes, you need spring compressors. It can be hard and dangerous if you don't know what you are doing - hence the you tube video you should look at.

Standard shocks will not last with lowering springs, best bet is to go to a pick a part like mentioned above and just swap the complete strut in
