Holley 650.too big?

attitudedesignz, Sep 23, 2:20pm
Hi all, son just got a Commodore with a 304. All the EFI and electronics have been taken out and it's now running a 650 double pumper.

My question is is the 650dp too big for a 304! It runs well as is but i have my doubts 'bout size of carb'.

kingfisher21, Sep 23, 2:51pm
650DP is way to big if the engine is stock, a 600 vac secondary would be a better one to run, a 465 is better still on a stock motor but can be hard and expensive to get.

As long as the jets are right it will be fine used to run a 650 dp on a 308 went fine

cheeRS guys, been awhile since i played with Holleys.

The guy he got it off also said the rear jets had been "drilled out". Which is why i started to think 'bout it.

Im running a 750 d/p on my 351. Goes mint now. I agree with splinter. But a 600VS would go well. Thats what my old man runs and that goes bloody nice

ive got same set up 304 vn headed torque power dual plane intake 223degrees @50'' cam 650 demon dp carb with 67 primary jets have yet to fire it up.cant wait!. but if yours ''runs well why fix if aint broken''!

because withsmaller carb, it may run even better.
a 650dp is way too big for it, and although it will makeplenty of power when you are caning it at high rpm and wide open throttle, realisticly, how often are you there!
A smaller carb such as a 465 or a 600 vac sec if you have to, will give you far better throttle response, and much more , power in the low to mid rpm range. albeit at the expense of all out top end power.

Think about what your engine is doing 95% of the time, and carb it to suit that, not carbing it to suit the other 5%.

wouldnt bother with a dp unless its manual

cuda.340, Sep 23, 5:05pm
if you drive like mum go 600 vs, if you drive like her son, go the 650 dp.

jason18, Sep 23, 5:33pm
Yeah I listened to Cuda.340 advice and stuck with my 750d/pHoly crap im stoked I did!

kingfisher21, Sep 23, 5:45pm
Have you dynoed it to find the REAL facts! Dyno and seat of the pants are two totally different things. I only ran a 750 Demon on a 650HP 410 cube Ford smallblock, any bigger and it lost HP, and this was on an engine that spent all it's time at 100% full throttle, a 650 DP is way to big for a standardish Holden 5 litre, PERIOD.

patiki1, Sep 23, 6:14pm
Why worry about the 650!He's got injected heads which have massive ports that will kill any velocity anyway.Im sure it wont be long before a cam, compression, exhaust and tune will be on the cards.

jason18, Sep 23, 6:14pm
Not on dyno yet. Shit it feels good.

The same manifold the bntnzv8's use.

krames, Sep 23, 7:06pm
used to have a 850 dp 4 barrel on a 440 charger, man that thing sure could suck through the petrol

cuda.340, Sep 23, 8:27pm
the 340 in my 'cuda came from the factory with an 850 thermoquad, could light the tyres up instantly & mid range power was awesum.
