I've just gone through this process right now as it happens, and it has been relatively easy. I took a bike in that was a bit of a 'barn find'. Two new tyres and a bit of a clean, it flew through except for one little thing - even though the bike was NZ new it had a Euro style headlight that dips to the right instead of the left, which I was failed on. I replaced that and she was all hunky dory. Cost about $200 for the inspection & VIN number, and the rest was just the rego, so no big deal. Very quick process too!
I was lucky as the bike I had was previously registered in NZ which makes life a lot easier. All I had to do to prove ownership was to get a statuatory declaration signed by a JP and myself, and that did the trick (yes the bike is kosher FWIW)
Good luck!

Oh and things have changed a bit since attitudedesignz did that Honda - police declarations aren't needed/available now, and it looks like the costs have changed, and apparently they are a *tad* more stringent now according to the bloke who checked over my bike

I've heard they will strip tank and faringspeedo faring etc etc so they can visually see all the frame welds and joints to inspect for ripples and or cracks ( accident damage!) I'd have a talk to them, it may be better to present it in semi stripped condition ( save time and money for you)

They checked mine in less than 90 minutes, but mind you it was in mint condition even after sitting for years and years and years, so no hassles! I know for sure that the inspector didn't unbolt anything at all, but the frame is pretty exposed on the bike in particular
