There are two different sizes: 1 7/8 inch (47 mm) and 2 inch (50 mm). Just go to repco and buy the other size tow ball. You'll need a pretty big spanner to undo the nut. Make sure the Shank (thread) is the right size too as they have different sizes also. 1 7/8 is the most common in nz.

whats too big! the trailer coupling or the towball on the car, there are many standard light trailers with 50mm couplings cos I'm not sure after reading what you wrote just which part has what written on it, either way it will be a simple change the ball to suit

I like the trailer hitches that accommodate both sizes, you just flip the handle round and the internal coupling takes care of size irregularities : spare towball is simplest option

Now you're confusing things - go back to the first line of post #2. Those are the 2 sizes in imperial & metric.

Look at a tow ball at some stage in your life. One is stamped 50mm the other is stamped 1-7/8". By this simple act of using your eyes, you'll see that one is known as a metric size and the other is imperial. I'm yet to see a "47mm" towball anywhere.

plenty with 2" markings too, and the 2 1/2" one I have here
50mm is 2", immaterial if metric or imperial
light trailer was 1 7/8 heavy trailer ( tandem behind private vehicle) was 2" heavy trailer ( single or tandem behind truck or tractor) was 2 1/2 pre the days of ringfeder or the like drop pin couplings - back then trailers were limited to 6 tons gross ie about 3 ton payload
