Birds/starlings nesting time. check your vehicles

article that is on radio nz about farmers checking tractors. http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/rural/115936/watch-out-for-tractor-nesting-birds,-insurer-warns

but they will nest in any vehicle that sits for any time in the same space - so even if you have a vehicle sitting for a day or two - check it. I was lucky with the safari 4wd, cause I had check under the bonnet - there were two well built nests beside the firewall & it had only been down by the hay barn for 3 days. pays to check if you have starlings that nest nearby.

I had one built between the exhaust manifold and the chassis rail in my V6 Surf. It was massive, I can never figure out how the little blighters mange to span such a large gap, how do the balance the first bit!

It doesnt take a day oir two. An industrious Starling will have a nest built on a hot exhaust manifold while you stop for lunch.

clever birds. & with some insurance policies - tis classed as negligence if your vehicle does catch on fire.

Easiest way to help prevent birds nests around tractors is to leave the bonnet up when not in use, even over lunchtime if you can. On one of our tractors you can't lift the bonnet but we do leave the side panels off it over the nesting season & that stops them on that tractor, they obviously don't like the more open spaces.

Yep, anywhere like either of the manifolds seems to be the perfect pozzy for the little swine's, and as NZ Tools has said, they don't need 3 days to build a nest.

Poached vehicles, they don't just go for tractors, they will go for anything.

My theory is that if they themselves were hatched and reared in an engine bay, once they mature they seem to choose similar locations for their own nests.
