Not legal to sell!

lordv81, Sep 13, 7:07pm
I just dont see the point in having "black" plates.I get people all the time asking about car wrecks Im selling if they have 'black' plates or not.Really who cares at the end of the day, just as long as they are live IMHO.There was a guy in the Waikato selling brand new plates on TM from the 1930s-1940s,the old green background with white lettering and the maltese cross on them.Still in the original wax paper.

legal to sell, not legal to use.

pebbles61, Sep 13, 7:11pm
Some people prefer the black ones

unclejake, Sep 13, 7:26pm
I made some a while back and they look pretty legit

bitsy_boffin, Sep 13, 7:27pm
Well, I don't see the point in having personalised plates.

Black plates do lend some provenance to a classic car though.

pebbles61, Sep 13, 7:27pm
Nice, in regards to making your own black plates

pebbles61, Sep 13, 7:28pm
Agreed, it looks odd when you see an Austin 1300 with white plates.

unclejake, Sep 13, 7:31pm
What I did isn't strictly legal, but the original (black) plates were damaged beyond repair and I don't like white plates on old cars either

pebbles61, Sep 13, 7:52pm
Looks good, and everything is legal 'till you get caught ;-)

cowlover, Sep 13, 9:19pm
How could he have got hold of them in the first place! They must have been issued to something way back in about mid 60's.Not sure how you could use them as a personalised plate either as personalised plates are a certain style and in this case apparently the number is not available as a personal plate.

morrisjvan, Sep 14, 6:47am
don't know why every one gets so excited about ''black plates'' they were not part of the car, they were only relavent in N.Z, and vehicles prior to 1964 had others fitted as ''original''. People don't seem to get so excited about brown plates or yellow plates or orange plates.

sifty, Sep 14, 6:49am
I'm wondering what would happen if I bought the personalised plate in that number.!

Really the seller should have dome so and sold together

[edit] unless the buyer has already registered the number as a P Plate]

franc123, Sep 14, 10:40am
Probably because you can't still legally use the pre 64 plates, b&w's you can.Originality and their appearance is the main reason why people want them, even on early mid 80's vehicles. Now that they are relatively rare they stand out in the crowd now.

fryan1962, Sep 14, 10:53am
in oz it is the same,
what was common was to get personalized plate in the numbers of your black and white plate

then put them away and put originals on the car, gov is happy they got the coin
90% of pc plod did not know the difference

elect70, Sep 14, 1:19pm
OldBlack plates dont show up well onspeed cams which is whythey want all cars wilth whiteplates . If lose old black plate on pre 64 car then they issue new white plates .

doctor_evil99, Sep 14, 1:47pm
Some people prefers black ones and strong - new white ones are weak and don't last long!

mr-serious, Sep 14, 2:00pm
I have a personalised plate on a re-registered classic. The plate is the same numbers and letters as the original rego. I can infact use my old black plates and its completely legit.

trogedon, Sep 14, 2:15pm
A friend of mine restored a motorbike. It had the original black plate with it. He rang LTSA to register it with that number. They said that number had never been issued. He said it has, and that he was holding it in his hand.
A mystery of the universe.

Use an O not a zero.

hutchk, Sep 14, 5:39pm
Speaking from experience, they show up well enough to get a nice invoice a few weeks later.

morrisjvan, Sep 14, 7:08pm
only if they are already in use.

But i still don't see how you could use a "black" set which have never been issued (or at least attached) on some car other than the one they were issued to back in 1964.As far as i can tell they are simply ornaments
