Ls1 Transplant.

Who's done one! I've got one coming up in the distant future and whilst having no problems with fabricating mounts and other stuff yada yada, don't really have a grasp of the engine management side of the swap. The donor vehicle is a 99' SS VT 5.7 and recipient is a 57' Big Window GMC Pickup. The Holden is running but a light comes up in the dash that I am going to look into/sort out in the near future. But what I really want a bit of insight on is how does an engine like this run when half of its sensors are missing . like brake ones and I guess there must be others. Dash ones! I don't intend to run the Holden dash etc. So in a nutshell - how does it all work! Who's familiar with swapping these sorts of things.

If you get the factory ecu tuned with vcm software or similar the tuner can get into the ecu and turn alot of the unused sensors off and turn off all the anti theft stuff so you dont need to use the factory transpoder key and all that stuff

Easiest option is probably to run with an aftermarket programmable ecu. be prepared to invest some good coin in getting it wired up correctly by an auto sparky.

buy a complete "painless" loom from the states. there are dozens of companies selling LS1 looms for rods.
such as:
http://www.corvetteonline.com/tech-stories/ignition-electronics-efi/lsx-wiring-for-dummies/
have a google around or find some US forums and see who does a good deal. i know summit racing do one

I would stick with the stock ecu they are way more advanced than a link or similar and are fully tunable you can even ditch the air flow meter

Ivan Jujnovich put one in his truck and ran the fly-by-wire throttle, it gave him no end of grief and took ages to get it working.

Cheers, this is an interesting read.

trader_84, Sep 13, 7:29pm
Yeah i hear you. The way I am thinking is that this has been done a heap of times. meaning the mistakes and challenges in the mission would now be well understood. I understand so far that one must have a choice between modifying the existing loom or obtaining one that has the necessary wires . I think.

rob_man, Sep 13, 7:38pm
The other side of it is that there are no visible wires in his engine bay, it's pretty much a bare area with the engine sitting there in the middle, quite effective.

Robin at Torque Performance sells a box that allows you to run the computer with the body control module turned off, he can point you in the direction of someone who could wire it up too.

rod-zone, Sep 13, 7:59pm
Yip 100%.you will need a stand alone trans computer also as the 65le is computer controlled,
a LINK or similar is ALOT MORE tunable than a stock ecu.and far more advanced,i can put you onto a guy who is right up with LS conversions.have a look through my trade listing for details

I am going to purchase one of these . GM LS-SERIES ENGINE The Complete Swap Manual . from off here and then take it from there. Ta peeps.

kingfisher21, Sep 13, 8:21pm
WRONG, the standard ECU is WAAYY more tuneable than a LINK or similar, the standard ECU maps something like every 50 rpm, you just need someone that knows what they are doing, and you can run an auto trans easily with out any other unneccessary extras, getting fly by wire working is easy also, PROTUNE can easily do whatever you want to do with any LS engines and there are many others.

Come on trader put the holden motor in the lux put a big block in ya GMC lol

trader_84, Sep 14, 6:14am
Mate . the scary power from my 2.8 Lux grunter freaks me out sometimes!

dozerman, Sep 14, 6:20am
Have a ls1 turbo in my boat .Runs standard delphi computer easy to tune and turn off trans security and other settings with flash scan tool.12 wires to engine is enough with mafless tune

trader_84, Sep 14, 6:24am
Dozer (and what sorta dozer!) can you elaborate a bit more! Do you mean 12 odd wires and you can get an Ls1 running!

dozerman, Sep 14, 7:12am
Scan tool is efi live .12 wires are the only wires going direct to engine coil packs fuel pump and map sensor all mounted in hull. Once you have the colour coding for wiring loom its not the hard to wire up .I have no relays or fuses in system as i would rather see smoke than the engine cut out.Fly by wire can be changed back to manual throttle body.
