Have you timed #1 cylinder to fire at TDC with dizzy. Your timing sounds out, so go back to basics and get that right. You know you have spark, but she won`t go when its outta whack.

The plug you tried might be rooted! If so, that will only be part of the problem by the sound of it. Do what moparpete says, then go from there. Does it have a new set of plugs!

make sure its tdc on the VALVE stroke not the exhaust stroke

Was it going before you tutu'd! Might pay to check the dizzy drive pin. Just grab the rotor and see if it turns more than you think it should.
Give jason a call - it's going to happen to him soon!

Hey the spark thing sounds a bit strange, might be an earth or the dissy polarised wrong maybe.

When I had Ford V8s I always liked the idea of the dizzy at the back (mainly cos it's tidier !).When I had Chev's I missed the ease of getting to the dizzy at the front. 351 Cleveland and 350 Chev I rate as equals :-)

As above - is the timing right! Also strange that the plug didn't spark when you earthed it, but did against the block! - Was the motor running OK before the chain was done! - Are you SURE you have the leads in the right places (if they were taken off). - Is the engine properly earthed (cable from battery to engine), or just earthing through trans/other stuff. (assuming here from memory that Ford blocks should be earthed directly, I know my chev did some odd things if it wasn't).

Strange. were the new plugs the correct type! Did you gap them (although would still expect it to run without that). Anyway, good news that it's up and running again.
