I agree I was used to the tassie system in that it was the operators responsibility to ensure the vehicle was roadworthy and as long as the registration was kept current the car was never inspected from new

You are probably correct, but Hometune advertise that they can do the WOF for you when you book a service. I assume this means they take the car away to do the WOF and bring it back to your home or workplace.

The money and time saved by 12month warrants will be blown at the first police checkpoint and I bet there will be plenty of them. We all know its the WOF guy who makes us buy new tyres when they get low tread. With 12months WOF lots of people will run there tyres past the 1.5mm easily and pay the price.

There are plenty of mechanics who will come and pick up your car from your work and drop it off when done.

Personally, I drop my car off, mechanic takes me back to work.

it does not take long at a VTNZ either, 20-30 minutes

If the WOF is changed to yearly, I would Imagine the cost to double.
more will fail and things will be required to be replaced sooner than they would have with 6monthly warrants

ie, brake pads. Still good for 6 months will have to be replaced a year before they are actually worn because the garage doing the warrant cant guarantee them lasting a a whole year.

Yay finally someone that understands! Amazingly enough if you don't have any issues with you car and maintain things/fix things when they need it you won't have a problem going through checkpoints, there won't be extra costs if there aren't any issues. The money you spend on maintenance you would have had to anyway if you did get stickered at the roadside and ordered to get a new WOF. Its the slackers that need nailing and putting off the road for their ignorance and apathy.

Yeah and the MTA own VTNZ, they dont want to loose out on profit.

llortmt, Oct 10, 4:18pm
There you just missed the point. 12 month wofs would be great for VTNZ and VTNZ only, they raise (read double) the price of the wof and lay off half their staff and in doing increase their profit.
I'm not sure the MTA are REALLY committed to fighting (www.handsoffthewof.co.nz) to keep the current system at all. its all a bit smoke and mirrors in my opinion.

franc123, Oct 10, 4:19pm
Passed WOF's aren't and never have been a guarantee of compliance for any period in the future, if items are getting to the end of their life a good inspector passes them with a warning and maybe give a guesstimate of the period before replacement is needed. From then on its the operators responsibility. There would not need to be any changes to wear limits, as it stands NZTA rules cannot override manufacturers wear limits on componentry.

franc123, Oct 10, 4:28pm
You could be right, MTA are possibly more concerned about a large decrease in their membership base more than anything else. Its a certainty IMO that the lower volume AVIC's will be wiped off the map if for example compulsory roller brake testing and/or emission testing comes to pass. VTNZ can't just put up their prices in isolation, it would have to be industry wide.

mantagsi, Oct 10, 5:20pm
Personally I like the idea mentioned previously by another poster, that the less items you fail on, the longer interval between WoFs. I make an effort to look after my vehicles, and subsequently I do not fail warrants, its nice and easy! :)

thejazzpianoma, Oct 10, 6:37pm
Aside from whether its a good thing or not I am disappointed that the MTA are directly lobbying the public in this manner.

Just seen a prime time television advertisement.

Its very lopsided unless the government presents its side of the argument in a similar manner, which would be a waste of taxpayer money if they did.

Of course the MTA are quite within their rights to do that. But sadly I think a large proportion ofpeople will be too stupid to understand that they are doing it because of their vested interest in the matter and not because of road safety.

I especially don't like the way its done with a tiny little MTA logo in the corner being the only reference to whom the message is coming from.

elect this man! I'm a Uni student and don't drive much, my car does not need a wof every 2,000ks! I spend so much on rego wof and insurance that fuel cost doesn't even add up to the other costs!

carclan, Oct 10, 6:56pm
Bin the wof, my 05 Fairmont was rejected 12 months ago because the silly old pom inspecting it said the head lights were to blue - it original ! I asked how blue is too blue, they told me its up to the inspector. It a licence to printmoney for these out fits.
