Just watching the indy car racing and a 15 car pile up has taken the life of Dan Wheldon 1978-2011.

Tragic loss to motorsport :( RIP.

So sad. Even in these days of increased safety, it is still a very dangerous sport.

Gut-wrenching, to hear of anyone dying on the track.

Thoughts to his family, team, and friends.

Imagine how thedriver that caused it must feel .4 wide & banging wheelsthen trying to force his way down tobottom of the track at 220 MPHwasalways going to end in tears .Poor Danbeenlong time since a mororracingdeath at top level. Last I recall wasScott KallitaofNHRA& must be 10 years since last Indy car fatality & even morefor F1Senna was the lastas I recall.

Why! leading into the home straight as always R.I.P our Brother.

A kiwi caused it. Wade Cunningham according to the news.

Greg Moore was killed a few years back(probably at least 8 years ago in IRL), it wasn't even an oval. And Alex Zanardi (sp) was just bloody lucky on that German oval.

ryanm2, Oct 19, 4:54am
I just re-checked my facts, it was 1999, on an oval. Age.

marmatt, Oct 19, 5:44am
and then you can add eric medlen and scott kalittapeter brock , mark porter , denni hulmeall thoose guys died doing what they lovedrip todansad day to end the season over there

pfemstn, Oct 19, 5:53am
sounds like he had started from the back in an attempt to get to the front and win for a huge monetory reward! ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Dont blame the young Kiwi!

speedwayfan1, Oct 19, 11:35am
No one should be blaming the drivers here, the race officials are again to blame for letting the race go ahead even when the majority of drivers weren't happy with it.

It happened not too long ago on another oval near the end of a race, drivers were reporting there's too much water on the track and the race officials didn't listen, let the race go ahead and Danica spun on the restart, taking a few others out too.

RIP Dan.

Ah here we go again, the armchair experts are staking their positions already!

ryanm2, Oct 19, 2:19pm
It were the drivers that were complaining, That oval is apparently to small for indycars, no width to work with.

elect70, Jan 4, 4:52pm
Do they still have Indy lights were rookiesmustcompete before being allowed into themain class !Watching it I knew a big crash was going to happen, seemed to thinkthey were all going to win it on first laps .Wonder if the big money promises makes them take more chances.
