I wonder if it will give shit like every other common rail, alloy head Japanese turbo diesel! Still, 3.0l/100km average shows what a waste of time hybrids are.

3L/100km! This is awesome economy, I want one!

keeping in mind that advances in diesel happen all the time and that the euro's haven't released a new diesel for a while I would say this is more of a sign of things to come rather than the death kneel for european diesels. It is easier to improve apon existing tech' and construction than to re-write the book. If someone had said 10 years ago that hyundai would be producing world class diesel cars we'd probably all have scoffed at the thought. As well as this, expect a new generation of diesel hybrids and full electric cars in the near future that will raise the bar once again. In saying all of this, well done Honda, welcome to the world of diesel.

So far, it's only the occasional Toyota and Nissan that give trouble. Isuzu, Mazda / Ford and (surprisingly) Mitsubishi seem to be OK.

FYI that engine has been around since the previous generation Accord Euro came out in 2003 so its hardly new tech
Its a really good performer though, but apparently unrefined compared to the Euro diesels.

A Peugeot 406 HDi in 2002 travelled 2348kms across Australia on just one tank. Assuming it drained its 70L tank absolutely bone dry, it consumed 2.98L/100kms.

Yes, but it's plus $4.40 per 100km for road user charges, equivalent cost to another 3 litres, so make it "6 litres per 100km" as the best economy you're going to get. Many small petrol cars start looking attractive then, they are probably going to be more reliable once the miles get up, less expensive to register, and better chance that you'll be able to do some maintenance yourself, or get a local mechanic to do it.

If we stopped spending the $billions we squander on killing each other, and did some SERIOUS fuel economy R&D, the world would be a better place.http://www.fueleconomy.- gov/feg/extremeMPG.jsp

Keep in mind that is an average figure, and in a Honda Accord, what petrol mid-large sizer is going to give an equalivent of 6l/100km, before adding in the fact that diesel is 60 cents cheaper. Probably none. In this case diesel wins. But it is all most likely irrelvant as the test was done in Europe, not NZ goat tracks.

The "economy run" was also that - an "economy run" - I assume not the same test as what's used for official fuel economy test figures. I don't disagree with you, but wonder what the comparison would be if an ultra high-tech, light weight, direct injected, turbo petrol engine was used. In the end, about the same amount of energy is available in a litre of petrol (so long as it isn't an alcohol blend), or a litre of diesel.

what amazes me is that even these modern diesels are still only about 26 %+/-efficient for fuel burn, once you can start capturing that 70+ % then you'll be on to it.i'm surprized they are'ntusing an exhaust gas power turbine like they did onthe big pratt and whitneyradial a/c engines, etc etc. and any technology the japs have has either been nicked or sold to them. they invent NOTHING

They do, it's called a turbo charger.
mugenb20b,

You sure about that!
djrandomguy,

they invented clear tail lights. yippee!
mm12345,

Apparently rocket engines are about 70% efficient.

Cut them some slack. They invented the motorcycle which didn't leak oil, and produced the best british sports car ever made.
the-lada-dude,

NO ITS NOT A TURBO CHARGER !it looks like the turbine side of a turbo s/c but the turbine helps drive the engine there are 3x turbines / engine.its the 3 row P & Wr3200 radial ( me thinks ! ) am i right or am i right !

The comparable petrol figure is 4.5l/100km:
3l/100km diesel @ $1.479/l + $4.4 RUC = $9.41/100km For 91 petrol @ $2.089/l, the same $9.41 would buy 4.5l.
r15,
Oct 18, 8:01am
find me a medium sized petrol vehicle that can travel 100km on 4.5l of fuel, and once you've done that find one that will do that on 91

Euros dont rush in ,let othersbe the pathfinder& take all the crap when itgoes wrongthen learn from it .BMW said10 years ago they wouldntput dieselin a passenger carnow look at them .

but BMW have been producing diesel engines from well over 10 years ago.
