Hey Intrade.

I have just been and towed my car home. It died suddenly on way to work. It's not the coolant it's something electrical. It will turn over but no fire. Haven't checked anything like spark yet.

2000 Punto 1.2 manual 16V 188

I have Fiat ECUscan on my laptop and a cable I got from dealextreme but I haven't been able to get it to scan the car successfully yet either. I had to buy a serial to USB adapter cable, could that be a problem!

I won't be able to do anything with it untill tomorrow. Would appreciate any ideas.

thats the mk2 Rightas the mk1 was not obd2 . most commont fault for a car not going would be 2 things . fuelpump in tank dead or no power . or the airflow meter has died. This is the first 2 things to check along with spark and cambelt still ok. it be mk2 the mk1 is 176 if i recall right.

for the scan i got problem with win7 crap, you need to make sure its got full admin rights and going thru a converter serial usb could also be a big problem yes, Wh did you not buy a usb one instead of serial! if you got a old pc with serial port then i be using that one and what exact tool did you buy, i got dealextreem on my list but have not purchsed anything off there.

ELM327 cable. I didn't know what end it came with. They don't give the best description of goods on the site.

You don't have to buy the scan tool, you just need the cable and ECUscan on your lap top, right!

i dont quite get what you say here . elm 327 is a chip to comunivate with the obds and the computer.elm is a generic code scanner. i have the advanced tool from the maker of elm germany the one the new generation its called unicarscan and it can log on to cars that professional tools cant get on.

intrade, Sep 30, 1:15pm
you got your car obd plug from there to the tools with the elm-chip and from there to the laptop with the software, The laptop is not able to comunicate directly with the car the tool pluged in to obd port is what helps the communication between the 2 . so no you cant have pure wires from obd to laptop, if that is what your asking.

well do you got a old pc with xp and a serial port!
and yes correct the other is the direct usb one. What software did come with it, you normaly have to select the ports in the program but i would say it could be tricky with a usb serial conetor thingy attached.

daryl14, Sep 30, 2:20pm
The one I bought online seems to just be an extension cable. The second one seems to have the actual chip/tool in it. No I don't have a serial port. I bought a serial to USB adapter from local computer retailer. Which is most likely useless.

Argh.

you should also have been gettinga software cd but your best to check the obvious stuff i posted above if you hear the fuelpump buzz to prime and if it still got spark on plugs.

just checked the one with serialconection post *8 is only extention as it said so in english ,the secound is the one with chip. they also come as serial with chip .
so you recon the phisical quality is ok of the extention you got!
and was there no shipping charge as advertised!

Hey, I have just ordered ther correct ELM327 cable/tool. Yes as it says there is free shipping, price in USD. I understand it comes with some ripped off software that may or may not be useful.

As for the car I have found my fuel gauge is stuck and I had simply run out of fuel. I will try to source a new sender as I looked on ePER and it seems to be a separate part from the pump in the tank. I can't seem to get a part number off there though.

just call gavineuro-italian car parts limited 15 Saturn Place Albany
.for parts he is most likely able to find you a sender unit
i would probably just use the trip meter to track fuelconsumption.
