ECU CHIPS

bjmh, Sep 27, 6:03am
i had a guy come into my workshop selling the above,he reckoned the chip for a new hilux would give an increase from 128kw to 160kw and an increase of 80nm of torque.Has anyone had experience with these !

yea you dont want to buy a crap chip to start with. the engine is built in a way he probably did mean 128 hp to 160 hp but even there you have to have a good map not one that boosts the charger to "oblivion" dont know if i spelled that word right lol. Do reasearch of problems and what theupgrade includes . You want egr delete in a upgrade as a must have! or it will be bad as the egr is already struggeling with the factory default and its genereated heat. thats the short version. in the longer version you have to check clutch issues 80nm should be ok but dualmass flywheel dont like any extra torque and gearboxes are olso built to handle specific strenght limmit.

cheers intrade for your useful input, basically what i had already thought.just wondered if anyone had used them.

If they are the brand "ECU Chips" then yes I have fitted a heap to Hilux and Landcruiser V8. We have done Dyno runs and yea they do what they say they do. The fuel economy is what most owners are happy about.

I dont know the hilux but VW are just remapped on to the original ecu. like my bora tdi is tuned and egr deleted from its 130bhp to about 160 bhp. Now this engine did come with 150bhp output so the tuning is well within its capable handling apart from the dualmass clutch that i will one day upgrade to a stage 2 solid mass. I have to be real carfull with the throttle as it accelerates all normal up to 1700rpm thats when all .Hell. brakes loose when you have the throttle pushed like half way down. The 160 hp are developing at that rpm and drop off when it reaches 3200rpm on the motorway it takes like 1 secound to overtake when you pull out your in 6th gear push throttle 1 small black cloud.out the tailpipeand boom its in front andyour doing well past 120 kph by the time your passedif you dont take the foot off instantly . that wont happen with your hilux when you chiptune it, the tdi pumpedüse are the worlds most powerfull .power to waight ratio diesel engine i wanted the 150hp factory 4motion but there is none in nz and probably wont ever be as they are euro 3 emission.

yes it was "ECU CHIPS"

gadgit3, Sep 27, 8:26am
If it was Jason you seen, he is very clued up on how to make jap common rail diesels pull good power. The Hilux chip is a 5 min job to fit up and then there are the other parts they have been working on like fly by wire throttle responce kit. great for the likes of XR8 Falcons

intrade, Sep 27, 8:26am
thereyou go just get egrerased and use flashlube or there likes and change fuel filters on time. I personally would even upgrade the fuelfilter on commonrail to twin filters system with special water seperation. i made a 2 micron unit for my vw with catapillar spinonfilters

bjmh, Sep 27, 8:46am
i see BNT are selling twin filter /water sep systems.whats flashlube!

intrade, Sep 27, 8:49am
you need one that can be fitted . I cant fit a twin on my tdi no space

Lot of money to pay for something that just fools the ecu to increase rail pressure by altering the signal from it.

I chipped my 1.9TDI for $330 (kit direct from UK).supposed to get 30BHP more and 60Nm more torque. Certainly feels like it. Measurably better economy too (they reckon 5/6mpg). I doubt if headers and a flash new exhaust system costing over $1000 would have achieved anything like that on a diesel.

i tow a fifth wheeler behind a 3lt turbo rodeo, i needed just a bit more wick on hills, certainly got it by rechipping, about 20% more power and the same in fuel savings

Open one of these "chips" up .$5 worth of parts and some wires.A true upgrade would be a proper ecu remap of timing ,fuel and boost control.

gadgit3, Sep 29, 8:34am
It's not just the parts you are paying for. Some one has develoved it and built the program for it. It dose what it says it dose and last time I prices some guy to "remap" an ECU it was well over $1000 and you don't even get $5 worth of parts with that.

gram, Sep 29, 9:08am
Actually $5 might be exaggerating it for parts.couple of ICs, few diodes and resistors. Fancy box tho.
Here's the answer for you. Bridge between pins 2 and 3 in your fuel harness with a 1.5K variable pot. Set it at about 8 or 900 ohms and away you go. Pretty crude but way more power (more fuel). Then you can smirk at us paying hundreds for something that's properly designed, marketed with a warranty etc.
Cheapskates get what ya pay for.

got a race chip pro from germany for my 2011 mondeo diesel and is fully adjustable so if an engine mgmt light comes on you dial it back it bit. this hasnt happened yet so have dialled in more power and the difference is awesome. think easy 20-30% more power and better economy. just went dun-inv-dun today on a third of a tank (400+kms) sitting on 110. cost me $330 landed
