Are soft top convertibles okay in the rain?

disco_super_fly, Oct 13, 2:20pm
Currently looking at buying one, but i'm unsure how it will handle the rain - as I can't garage it. Are they a pain in the bum and leak fairly easily! Cheers :)

Depends on what condition the top is in, and how well it was designed.

I drove an MX5 with new (cheap imported) top for a while and never had any leaking problems but obviously the holy top it replaced would have been an issue.

Actually rearward visibility was the biggest issue, even with a glass window it would have been hard to see out the back of that car.

Did you keep yours garaged! And is there like a waterproofing spray or something that I have to apply! I'm currently looking at a VW Golf 1995, so it's defo not new.

Depends what you are buying,a MX5 with a good hood normally dont leak however a MGF with a good hood(no holes, rips etc) normally do leak.

Best not to have a convertible if you don't have a garage.
Our sun UV ruins them.

+1.Had to laugh when I bought a car cover from Supercheap to protect my car stored outside and the cover disintegrated within 3 months.
Read the small print on the instructions and it said "Don't leave on more than 7 days".LOL

Thanks. Damnit. I'm so inlove with this car. But perhaps it's not the best choice.

edangus, Oct 13, 2:59pm
You could always look for a Hardtop convertible MX5. Best of both worlds

disco_super_fly, Oct 13, 3:03pm
MX5s are a little out of my price range :)

disco_super_fly, Oct 13, 3:04pm
You're welcome to purchase one for me though! I can pay in hugs and smiles

edangus, Oct 13, 3:10pm
Do you know my daughter! Thats her line.

disco_super_fly, Oct 13, 3:11pm
Hahaha maybe that's a sign

disco_super_fly, Oct 13, 3:17pm
Whoa thanks sooo much. This may seem like a silly question BUTTT im gonna ask anyway - can you fold down the seats so you can kinda sleep in the back of the car!

edangus, Oct 13, 3:19pm
Sadly, they are only a 2 seater. But they are an awesome little car to drive.

One of these!

About 7965% more reliable than the merc too.

edangus, Oct 13, 3:28pm
LOL No, but you are probably right on the reliability stakes

i would never get a soft top. my buddy has had his soft toproof slashed openand at $5,000 a time they are expensive to replace.

mm12345, Oct 16, 6:05am
I would never get a car with rubber tyres. My buddy has had his slashed a few times, so this is what he's had to do:

I'd never buy a car. A friend bought one and it got stolen.

bitsy_boffin, Oct 16, 10:25am
Your friends mistake was locking the doors.Don't lock the doors on a soft top.

timmo1, Oct 16, 10:42am
5 Grand!! What type of car was it! Mx5 softops are usually around 800 to 1000 mark.

timmo1, Oct 16, 10:43am
Leaks don't come from the roof itself usually (unless it actually has holes in it)- They come from the seals around the windows, A pillar or drain areas.

therafter1, Oct 16, 1:35pm
I have an MR-S convertible and it does not leak anywhere.

I have also had heaps of conventional saloons over the years, and quite a number of them leaked.

Had a fair few motorcycles over the years, and all of them leaked . oh, hang on, that was the gear I was wearing lol

peja, Oct 16, 1:39pm
As someone else has pointed out, if you are leaving it outside - especially in Auckland - rain isnt going to be the issue, vandalism/theft is. Soft tops get slashed quite a bit, sometimes by thieves looking for stuff, sometimes by assholes for the sake of it
