Do we pay to much in this country?

curlcrown, Oct 11, 4:27pm
Found an invoice in a Pugeot dated about 10 years ago in the UK. 5L oil, oil filter, air filter, four spark plugs and a head lamp bulb all for just over £65 including labour.

We do pay absurd amounts for many parts and tools in this country, especially given how strong our dollar is and the ease and price of freight and logistics in this day and age.

Having an industry dominated by a big few who try and take the micky on price ruins things for everyone. Not just directly either, as people get savy and just order their stuff from off shore Kiwi jobs are lost and Govt income from GST is wasted as well.

I have no problem paying an extra 50% even to get something over the counter and support NZ. However 1000% markups as I have seen in some cases I find personally insulting.

Yes Repco, I am talking about YOU with your $900 Vectra MAF sensors that you can buy for $100 NZ over the counter in other countries.

there has to be some benefits of waging war on oil rich countries (cheap oil)

I dunno, people seem to be satisfied that we live in a country that has a sluggish economy thats heavily dependent on imported goods, has unrestricted access to cheap crap from Asia, that does a good job of clogging our landfills, and that we pay through the nose for absolutely everything else we need to function as a modern economy, and often mediocre products and service too. Food, power, fuel, housing, insurance, dentistry, car parts, accomodation, finance, telecommunications, domestic air travel outside of the main centres etc.

What was the exchange rate at the time !If our $ was buying 50p UK at the time ( for example ) that's $130 . Or it could've been $200, so maybe not cheap there either.

thewomble1, Oct 11, 11:08pm
Repco not always as bad as people make them. Today went to Supercheap and they wanted $11.99 for a cigarette socket and $8.99 for the piece that has the heating element. Went to Repco and purchased complete (the socket and the element piece) for $8.99 and they said apply for their gold card and we will give you 10% discount on the sale.

Yeah it happens alot.
Peugeot 206 oil filter repco like $55, from the UK 2.68 (like NZ$9 when you factor in shipping)

I recently got a quote from ABC for brake components for my Herald's total rebuild (master cylinder kits, caliper seals, new pistons, new wheel cylinders and clutch slave) for NZ$300 which i thought wasn't too bad.

Ended up buying them for NZ$125.60 delivered from the UK.

Pertronix kit a few years back NZ$320 from the CHC disty, NZ$116.00 from the US.

Bottom end rebuild kit for the same Herald NZ$650 delivered from the UK. I was quoted NZ$590 just for the pistons here.

I dont mind paying abit extra to support local businesses, but seriously. When it gets to that kind of markup its very hard to justify

I am guessing you went to an outfit like JiffyLube for an $18 oil change. They suck the oil out the dipstick with and sometimes don't replace your filter despite saying they have.

thejazzpianoma, Oct 12, 10:48am
This sounds like a universal accessory type part though! (Correct me if I am wrong).

Repco does crappy accessories and some high volume easily compared service items (like oil and some filters) quite well.

Ask them for some actual car parts, especially those for anything not considered absolutely mainstream (like the Vectra, even though there are plenty around) and you will likely be in for a shock.

Basically, if they think they can get away with it they will. Try ordering some NGK spark plugs from them that only fit non-mainstream vehicles (but are in stock in Auckland) and see what I mean.

oil filter for desiel Cruze from dealer $114.00 from BNT$20.00

thejazzpianoma, Oct 12, 10:51am
Don't get me started on Holden Dealers!
Not sure if they are all like it but the one's I dealt with a while ago were straight out liers and cheats. Not only charging a stupid price but significantly more than quoted for only half the work completed.

Then had the gall to brow beat the customer when I sent them a polite letter (on the customers behalf) pointing out their multiple breaches of the consumer guarantees and fair trading acts.

thejazzpianoma, Oct 12, 10:54am
BNT are sometimes good, I find it a little bit hit an miss though. Sometimes their tools can be a real bargain like the Jonesway Torx set I bought for $24, lovey big set of male and female. Other times not so much.

BNT are also actively trying to expand their range of VW parts and do reasonable prices from what I saw in their brochure a while back.

intrade, Oct 12, 12:17pm
no we dont pay to mutch for parts when you buy them at the right places. There is however places that charge 3000% more then others and this is the only country in the world wherethings are like that. Food prices are only 2 monopoly players who rip you off left right and center for most items.

saki, Oct 12, 2:49pm
What are you moaning about, a pint of bitter used to cost me 85p in 1983 what is it now!
