I agree, and as stupid as it looks first time around it probably wasn't a bad strategy. I think what caught him out was the amount of vines obscuring his view.

Not only can you see from the inside shot but if you pause the ariel view just as he goes over the road there is a huge amount of debris right accross the windscreen at precisely the wrong moment.

If it were not for that I suspect he would have seen the road and possibly even got away with it.

Very glad no one got electrocuted or struck by the lines/pole.
