Of course, if you buy an early 90s Corolla, fit webbing grabber seatbelts to it and drive slowly you can't go wrong.

He bought a tv off me once. Real quirky guy! Came over in a real old bomb and must have been driving like a lunatic, co'she got from 'west auckland' to Takapuna in 15 mins flat. Only likes toyota's, must be NZ new and only buy with a full service history and a pre purchase inspection.

Needs to be shot in the head with a ball of his own shit. Am I allowed to say that!

The guy has always given the impression of having being locked up in some suburban backstreet garage somewhere in Auckland for several years and been forced to deal with a whole heap of decrepid old european cars, if someone can give another explanation for his views, please do. Its interesting that the media (particularly TV3) seem to treat him as some sort of an industry consultant when it is obvious he is just a safety obsessed motoring writer that isn't really taken seriously by anyone. The one thing in his credit is at least many of the nasty faults that some cars develop are revealed, things that you won't hear upfront from new car dealers and certainly not from used ones.

I happened to hear this chap talking on the radio not so long ago. Interesting thing was he shared many of the views of the people the motoring msg board. Not so much about which car is best or worst as it wasnt an interview about that. More about road safety and behaviour etc etc. So he actually thinks along the lines of many who critisize him.

I heard him on the radio on the way home a few weeks back. Had to clean the windscreen from my own spit due to the BS I heard. "European cars are not made to last long as they change them every few years", what about the domestic Japanese market! "European cars are about fashion", even Ssyangyong would raise an eyebrow at the styling of such gems as Pug 3008, Multipla, Scorpio etc. Truth is in Europe there are millions driving every day to the local lederhosen factory and back without exploding on the side of the autobahn. My current vehicles are Japanese, the decision for these have nothing to do with the twisted reality of this individual.

That has got to be one of the most novel ways to solve a problem that I have heard about for a very long time, well done that man.
CMW is a pain in the arse, but it is typical, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. The media do tend to gravitate towards self appointed experts with bombastic opinions. The louder and odder the better

So he needs to be locked in a room with the jazzman so they can chat about Euro cars till they come to some sort of agreement about them !

National radio (my media of choice) always has him on when there is a motoring issue to deal with. I think he's ok but he's only one voice on the subject.

what he said
chebry,

He hates my car, its everything he recommends not to buy but its such an awesome car to drive I refuse to listen to his advice.
whqqsh,
Oct 21, 7:28am
He believes we should leave our cars unlocked with the windows down & crap or no radio to prevent side windows being smashed & car radio stolen. forget about the whole car being nicked! & Im sure the insurance company would love that idea
franc123,

In my book its not a good idea to take advice from people who have hyphenated names, or do strange things with facial hair. Nuff said.

it hurts my eyes trying to read his D&L guide.instead of trying to list every obscure thing( telling us now bad the morris marina was.yes we know.) someone should just bring out a book of buyers advice on say 50 popular models 5 to 20 years old.would be more useful and far less anal.

Last I heard he drove a Morris Oxford, I remember those very little to recommend one really but an interesting fossill.
countrypete,

And he referred to it as a "classic".Seriously blow to his credibility.
chebry,
Oct 22, 7:20am
Classic unluckily is defined by age not how good they actually were I mean kids think the Japanese rubbish from the 70s are classic yes those horrible headgasket eating rustbuckets from the 70s with the dodgy electrics back before the Japs learnt how to design and build reliable cars
akaniva,
Oct 22, 8:08am
Actually they're pretty good cars, very solid and reliable even if not very economical I think only around 28mpg on the open road at 60mph. The old Morrie Ox.
farwest,
Oct 22, 8:11am
God, you're a bunch of whingers.
akaniva,
Oct 22, 8:12am
So are you saying a Fiat rust-heap from the same era is better! Or some British crud! Lots of great Jap cars from the 70's that went and went. Cars like a Datsun 1600 or 180B were just what normal people wanted to drive around in economically and reliably.
