Why do some people.

Cover their licence plate numbers when their listing their car on Trademe! It pretty much says 'hey, don't check if my car has an inconsistent odometer or has money owing on it. Or am i missing something! If theres another reason it would be good to know

you can obtain the address of said car with the number plate - i think people are just paranoid though.

Even more silly is when they only covewr it in some of the pics or even worse list it in the ad.Can understand it if you have something really valuable but for an everyday POS car there is no point at all.

I don't think you can get the address anymore from a number plate, just the name, city & suburb !

Stops the scum from paying $5 (or whatever miniscule amount it is) to obtain the registered address and nicking the car and whatever else is sitting around the property.

Some peoples 'pos' cars are their most valuable possesion. If someone is that interested in the car they'd consider buying it, they're going to have a look at it.

offers a bit of protection for the boat in the background or the dirtbikes in the shed, POS it may be but if it gets you to work so you can feed your family then why not take the extra precaution!

Thing is, a criminal can go two ways about getting the address.

You can no longer obtain the name OR address of the owner of a car registered to a private individual, through a check of the license plate.
The unintended consequence of this however, is that it is very hard to establish who a car is registered to. A carjam or similiar paid report won't help you anymore. Easy for illegal dealers to buy a car and not change the papers and then say they have owned it for X amount of time and show you the papers, when in reality it is the previous owners entry on the form.
