Thanks alot. That'll give me some idea of what to look up now.
What about if it's a "Boss", where someone has put Windsor heads on a Cleveland block.how can I i.d the block (while it's still in the car)! I may not be able to get to any difficult markings, so maybe the different mounting points for things e.g, p/s pump, water pump!

boss motor is the other way around. cleveland heads on a windsor block. so try have a look at the block tag, on a windsor engine its on the rear right hand side near the starter motor.
Thanks for the info about block tag! i'll try find it when I look at the car.
Great link too. I'll have a read through it now.

I've found that a good way to see id tags and numbers on engines where you cant fit your head to see is to use a slim digital camera and take photos then veiw straight away. The good thing is you can just keep on snapping till you get it right. Good luck.

Once you've seen one of each you'll tell pretty easy.

windsor heads have the exhaust flange bolts in a horizontal straight line, cleveland heads have the bolt holes diagonally across the ports. cleveland block has the timing cover cast into the block, windsor blocks have a seperatealloy timing cover. If you have a windsor block and clevo heads then you have a boss.,

I thought a cleveland block was a lot bigger than a windsor.

Comparing 351w to 351c. heavier but not bigger as such. both 90 degree, same bore size and bore spacing. clevelands look bigger with the heads on as cleveland heads are wider. cleveland has a 9.2 deck height and most 351 windsors have a 9.5 inches deck height

yea i wasnt sure about the exhaust bolts, so was going to check my heads at work, instead of pointing him wrong. and also i think the windsor main caps stick out below the sump rails, but on the cleveland, the sump rails are a lot lower down, and the caps are recessed!
