My neighbours car always starts first pop in the morning compared to my trusty surf

robotnik, Oct 23, 6:23am
Mitsi's are fine. Some of us do not find it necesssary to pay the 'Toyota Tax'.

chebry, Oct 23, 6:37am
I had an old mitzi that usually started but it was awful to drive

floscey, Oct 23, 6:58am
is your "trusty" surf not so trusty !

english_rose, Oct 23, 7:00am
My 'trusty' surf has issues starting in the mornings and afternoons lol.it's just the first start of the day lol.hubby is my mechanic and I think he needs a round tuit

There is nothing wrong with Mitsubishi's, I had a series of Mitsi's over a 14 or so year period and only one of them required any repair over and above normal servicing requirements over that period, and that was a 1990 V3000 that needed one of the bearings in the alternator replaced at a total cost of about $30 odd bucks.

What has given Mitsi's the undeserved reputation that they are now being continually plastered with is all of the horrible flogged out jap imports that were brought into NZ that should have gone thru a crusher in Japan, but instead they were imported into NZ by shady mongrels in the early days of the jap imports and then flicked to unsuspecting consumers over here.

There are some really good Mitsi's. I have owned a couple of them and the Mrs had one a few years back, they were all awesome and reliable cars. All various versions of the Mirage - no frills motoring but no hassle either.

intrade, Oct 23, 7:21am
yes but there is more to this . they are then purchased by people with no money whom dont service them at all . loads of them do develop loads of problems whether you sevice them or not but i must givethem credit they usually somhow still go again for years before they fully crap out , you just dont know if it goes now or not like wont start 15 minute later it starts fine is a tipical one of mitsubisheaps .I personally would go nuts with a car like that and then all the noises and other problems like lights going out in the middle of the night at 100kph like the naigbours magna , he drove the heap by adding water every day to the radiator for 2 years .So yea if you like to complain about things and need the stress then you should own a mitsi. If your like me where every little noise irritates me and its got to be fixed or know what it is, then you better dont own a mitsi.

Biodegradable grenades instead of a transmission in Aussie Magnas didnt help their cause or having roofs rust off in same or blocks cracking with crippling regularity then with the V6 heads cracking porous inlet manifolds and cracked exhaust manifolds yeah Mitsubishi has a sterling reputation, the best ones were built under licence by Hyundai or Proton.

chook90, Oct 23, 7:24am
Having purchased a brand new Lancer in 2002 I can honestly say I would never buy another Mitsi - EVER.
Ongoing issues with the transmission and a delightful oil leak from the head gasket which began at 14,000km and was never resolved.
If that wasn't enough it was cemented by unquestionably the worst customer service I have had the misfortune to experience. Apparantley it is normal for an automatic transmission to hold on to top gear whilst climbing a steep driveway from a virtually standing start and to be advised that an oil leak (think 2 litres per tank of gas) would go away in time on a 6 month old car convinced me that I had purchased the wrong thing.

If you listened to all the advice on here you'd be riding a pushbike strange how one person says there a great car (usually owned one) others say they are crap probably because they have had nothing to do with the car they are posting about. there was a thread about pt cruisers heaps of posters said they where absolute rubbish but only 4 had driven them and strangely enough of those 4 they all said they where good

muzzaandmich, Oct 23, 7:31am
The trouble is that some people buy cars and drive
But don't service them

ford4sale1, Oct 23, 8:07am
IMO all vehicle manufacturers have "some problems" with their products and Mitsubishi would be no worse than any other brand on the same playing feild. Toyota seems to have less problems but the vehicles they build often lack any real "cutting edge" technology, a bit like a pair of socks or y front undies, I think this gives them a slight edge. But frankly speaking their vehicles are pretty boring because of it. I like the term that someone else used earlier in the thread "Toyota tax" great stuff.

I had a Mitsubishi Libero for 12 years, ran up over 250 thousand kms on it, had to write it off due to some minor old accident damage that caused a WOF fail 6 years after the event (bent front chassis rail). Was not worth fixing on an 18 year old car that was also starting to burn oil and transmission slipping.Could have kept driving it though, probably got another 20-30,000 kms out of it before it died, was reliable

princesspossum, Oct 23, 8:25am
I love my mitsi. 260kms and still going strong *touches wood*.

kazbanz, Oct 23, 8:28am
Mitsubishi may very well recover its reputation as we move further away from GDI engines and that dreaded acidic roof glue issue.
Basicly the 1990's were not kind to mitzi at all.
Im getting a few 1500cc colts coming through which seem to be no better or worse than anything else out there on the market

tuttyclan, Oct 23, 9:27am
301,600 km on the original motor, gearbox and diff in my 1982 Sigma and still going well.
The early 80s was the last of the good Mitsis.

specialk11, Oct 23, 11:26am
The Aussie assembled diamantes are real gems.mine is about to hit 400k and still going strong.no issues other than wear and tear.

ceebee2, Oct 23, 12:45pm
Chook the "never resolved" head gasket leak is totally repairable, It is a really common fault in the lancers and some other Mitsi models. They leak / seep at the passengers side front. Remedy is to lift the head / skim and replace with a decent gasket.

The oil leak you state I suspect is what Mitsubishi call "metered oil consumption" is where a metered amount of sump oil is burnt in the cylinders. This is a form of upper cylinder lube. The factory allowance when I was a Mitsi Tech was 1 litre / 1063 kms which is a sump full MAX between lubes. They did this for engine longevity as correctly serviced most of these engines will easily do 300k with less than 0.001" bore wear. Try telling a previous Holden / Ford owner that who is accustomed to virtually zero oil consumption.

chebry, Oct 23, 1:01pm
Magna and Verada were Aussie built never seen a diamante over there thats a japUS model

andy61, Oct 23, 1:21pm
The Early 80s Mitsis were just as bad as the later Mitsis, rattly timing chains at low kms, high oil consumption(my dad had a 2 litre Simga back in the day when still newish, (about an 1980ish one) ,the motor was overhauled at around 95000kms due to oil consumption, knocking front struts, cracked heads and rust was very common as well.

It is 2012 !

I've owned a '99 NZ new Mitsi Galant S/W for the last 6 years, now done 150,000kms. Its a bit gas hungrey round town with its 2 litre motor and tiptronic trans, its nicely finished inside and you feel like you're in a quality vehicle driving it. Its looking a bit rough with lots of little dents and scratches courtesy of other shoppers. Thought about replacing it and looked at a late model Corolla S/W last week, but the Corolla wasn't as nice to drive and the interior has a far cheaper look to it than the Mitsi. Never had a problem with the Mitsi so will keep it and when gas reaches $3 a litre will have a look for a more economical replacement.

cuda.340, Oct 23, 2:01pm
we had a great run out of our 95 Diamante, had to replace a couple of ball joints but it had done 285000 kms so it was expected. it did start smoking a bit at idle so i did an on the motor valve seal replacement job, that fixed that problem. i still see that car sometimes & we sold it 3 years back so it's still a runner. the Maxima we replaced it with is no where near the same quality car but it's ok for the purpose we bought it for.
