does anyone know would this be thru the bar code on the rego, mileage tags or number plate recognition, spoke to a guy i know last week who claimed it was number plate recogntion but how would the camera process the required imformation so quickly

No it has something to do with the length of the vehicle, and also car and trailers/boats etc.

No need to worry mate, if they're measuring your length.

The news article said the new speed camera measured both the speed and length of the approaching vehicle. The visual flash is gone as it uses an infra red flash, so you won't know it it has gone off. Somehow the unit can tell the difference between a car, car and trailer and truck. All very clever.

well of course
the speed cameras didnt have anything to do with safety when they were introduced - & still dont now

Didn't they claim ages ago they were able to detect trucks and tailgaters! Now I know why I never set off the one parked on Manurewa hill, worried for nothing lol Done google search, very little info on the technology.

They have everything to do with safety. the Police swear that Speed cameras stop, vehicles crossing the centre line, getting hit on level crossings by trains, they stop drivers drinking, they stopcars running off the road and hitting poles and trees, they stop people driving unregistered and un warranted cars, they stop truckies fiddling their log booksThey are very sophisticated equipment.

gammelvind,

Hmmm you know the rules, you play the game outside of the rules you pay, it's just so simple. Do a forward pass in rugby, expect a penalty, it's just so simple. If I speed and get caught I pay, same with you, maybe you get the simple bit now! Maybe, maybe not!

I was just thinking (a very hurtful exercise - lol) about how many kms I must have travelled in the last year or two.heaps, actually. more than 20,000.In that time I have had only one speed related stop (and didn't get ticketed by the patrol officer who gave a me a polite lecture and then pointed out that, since he had stopped me, all the cars I had passed were now well ahead of me and he thought that may be sufficient penalty - nice fella actually with a sense of humour!).I know that in those couple of years I must have exceeded the speed limit quite a few times but I never got caught despite having seen speed camera vans operating. So then I thought if I DO get pinged it's not a bad return for one offence.$80 or whatever it is for being over 110kph over a period of 20,000kms seems reasonable to me.I'd just pay it and not get righteous about and bleat over and over about how unfair the system is and how it is all revenue gathering.I'd be sort of thankful they didn't get me all the other times.LOL!

Check you speedo agaist a GPS some time most speedos read 10km fast every car Ive put my GPS in does yours will be the same.

Yes a friend of mine explained it that way many years ago also. Divide up by the times you didnt get caught and its a very cheap fee to allow you to drive as you wish. Demerits are a pain though, they have finally wisened up there. Got done awhile back for 82 in 70 zone at 4am $80 but the worst part was the 15mins of my life wasted while the cop tried to use that new smart hoodaki. And whats with those new ripoff tickets that look like supermarket dockets, how on earth are you supposed to pin those up on the fridge or workshop bench.
xs1100,
Oct 27, 12:24pm
20 ks these days is considered average most reps do 40-60and truckies can do 100 plus so therefore chances are increasedof being caught and the punishment have a far greater effect on a truckie
gammelvind,
Oct 27, 6:08pm
2km fast for our car and 6km for my work van, I read somewhere that most manufacturers try and set up their speedos to read 5km fast from new.

calm & patient is the only way to drive
if your heart is pounding, your palms sweaty & your tolerance low - you shouldnt be in the drivers seat
you dont need to be angry, or on the recieveing end,to see the injustice in the justice department
