I'm going to buy an old moped, do some restoration on it and get it back on the road (hopefully). However I have no idea what is required, the NZTA site isn't very clear. Has anyone gone through the process in the last few years!
From what I gather, I would need to get it into a warrantable state (I know mopeds don't need to get a WoF every 6 months), get it checked and signed off or whatever then I go in and get it registered!

If it is less than 50cc then you just need to go along to LTSA and register it and get a plate . Doesnt need vinning or any other costly process at all . They dont even need to see the moped ! Its that simple !

Oh really! That's awesome if that's indeed the case then!

I think it costs about $400 to register them for the first time.

Wrong. Newly reg'd mopeds are no longer vin exemp so must be vinned, also, if you wish to reg it as a moped, you must provide evidence to prove its less than 2kw.

Can you detune and remove a spark plug lead from a 650 Triumph and register it as a moped, then fix it up after the WOF!

They wanted written proof from the manufacturer when I tried re reg, I gave and just used the plate off a wrecked scooter with live reg
